Buying the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G: 5G without the top price
The Galaxy A17 5G is the 5G version of Samsung's most popular entry-level mid-ranger. It has the same 6.7-inch Super AMOLED screen and the same stabilised 50 megapixel camera as the 4G version, but runs on an Exynos 1330 and works on the 5G network. Ours is brand new and sealed, with a 2-year warranty, in 128GB and 256GB.
Screen and speed
The Super AMOLED screen has a Full HD+ resolution, refreshes 90 times a second and reaches up to 800 nits in bright light — enough to read outside on a sunny day without any trouble. The Exynos 1330 is a 5nm chip that handles everyday tasks without stumbling and is easier on the battery than older designs. Apps open briskly, switching between them is smooth and video calls stay stable.
Cameras
The 50 megapixel main camera has optical image stabilisation, and in this price bracket that is the difference between a usable and an unusable evening photo. Alongside it are a 5 megapixel ultra-wide and a 2 megapixel macro camera. On the front, a 13 megapixel camera. For everyday photography — children, food, holidays, a concert — this is a perfectly good kit; for zooming in from a distance you have to look higher up the range.
Battery, water resistance and updates
Here too the familiar 5,000 mAh battery with 25 watt charging over USB-C, good for a full day. The housing is IP54 certified: dust and splashes do no harm, submerging does. Samsung promises six Android version upgrades and six years of security updates, so the phone stays safe for a long time yet. At 192 grams it sits comfortably in the hand. It has no headphone socket; a microSD card is possible, in the slot of the second SIM.
Do you actually need 5G?
Honest answer: not always. The 4G network across most of the EU is fast enough almost everywhere for streaming, video calls and navigation. 5G pays off mainly if you live in a busy city, download a lot of large files while out and about, or want to use your phone for years and not be left behind when providers wind 4G down. If you are in two minds, compare it with the Galaxy A17 on 4G: same screen, same camera, lower price. If you would rather have more — 120Hz and genuine waterproofing — look at the Galaxy A26 5G.

What is the difference between the Galaxy A17 and the Galaxy A17 5G?
The screen, the housing and the cameras are identical: a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED at 90Hz and a 50 megapixel main camera with optical image stabilisation. The difference lies in the processor and the network. The 4G version has a MediaTek Helio G99, the 5G version an Exynos 1330 with 5G support. If you do not need 5G, the 4G version gets you the same phone for less money.
Is the Galaxy A17 5G fast enough for everyday use?
Yes. The Exynos 1330 is built on an efficient 5nm process and handles everything an average day asks of it: messages, social media, streaming, navigation and video calls. Light games run smoothly. With heavy 3D games you have to turn the graphics settings down; this is not a gaming phone, and it does not pretend to be one.
How long will the Galaxy A17 5G keep getting updates?
Samsung promises six Android version upgrades and six years of security updates from its launch in August 2025. So you can use this phone safely well into the 2030s. That is unusually long for this price bracket and one of the strongest arguments for choosing Samsung in the entry-level segment.
