Buying the Samsung Galaxy A06: what you get
The Galaxy A06 is the cheapest full smartphone Samsung makes. It is meant for calls, messaging, taking photos and the occasional video — not for demanding games or serious photography. If you are after a first phone for a child, a simple second handset or just something that works without costing much, this is a sensible choice. Ours is brand new and sealed, with a 2-year warranty.
Screen and speed
The 6.7-inch LCD screen is generous in size, but the resolution stops at HD+ (720 × 1600) and the image refreshes 60 times a second. That is the honest difference with the pricier A models: text is a touch less sharp and scrolling feels less smooth than on the Galaxy A16, which has a 90Hz AMOLED screen. For WhatsApp, YouTube and navigation you will barely notice it in daily use. The MediaTek Helio G85 goes about its work calmly but steadily; leave ten apps open at once and you feel that this is an entry-level model.
Battery, connections and camera
The 5,000 mAh battery is this phone's strongest point. With normal use you will comfortably get through a day, with light use a day and a half. Charging runs over USB-C at up to 25 watts. Two things that have vanished from pricier Samsungs are still here: a 3.5 mm headphone socket and a separate slot for a memory card, so you do not have to give up a SIM card to add storage. What it does not have is NFC. Contactless payment with this phone therefore does not work — for some buyers that is a dealbreaker, so do check. The 50 megapixel main camera takes perfectly good photos in daylight; optical image stabilisation is missing, so in the dark you will need to keep your hand still.
Updates: something to watch
Samsung gives the Galaxy A06 two Android version upgrades and four years of security updates. For this price bracket that is decent enough, but it is clearly less than the six years the A07, A16 and A17 get. If you want to keep using the phone for years, the small price difference to the A07 is money well spent.
Who is the A06 for?
Choose the A06 if price is the deciding factor and you mainly use your phone to keep in touch. If you want a sharper screen, a snappier feel and longer support, look at the Galaxy A07 or the Galaxy A16.

Can you pay contactlessly with the Samsung Galaxy A06?
No. The Galaxy A06 has no NFC chip, and without NFC paying with your phone in a shop does not work. For banking through the app it makes no difference; it is only paying at the till that falls away. If contactless payment matters to you, pick the Galaxy A16, the A17 or the A26 5G: those do have it. We say so explicitly because it is the most common disappointment with this model.
How long will the Galaxy A06 keep getting updates?
Samsung promises the A06 two Android version upgrades and four years of security updates from its launch in August 2024. That means you can keep using the phone safely until roughly 2028. Do note that this is shorter than the newer A models, which get six Android upgrades and six years of security updates.
Can I expand the storage of the Galaxy A06?
Yes. The A06 has its own slot for a microSD card, separate from the SIM slots. So you do not have to give up a second SIM card to add storage, which is what happens on plenty of more expensive phones. Handy if you keep a lot of photos or music locally. That said, the 128GB it comes with is more than enough for most people.
