Buying the Samsung Galaxy A17: stabilisation in the mid-range
The Galaxy A17 appeared in September 2025 and is the successor to the A16. From the outside they look alike, but there is one difference that matters in practice: the A17 has optical image stabilisation on the main camera. That is exactly what you miss as soon as the light drops. Ours is brand new and sealed, with a 2-year warranty, in 128GB and 256GB.
Screen and performance
The screen is 6.7 inches, Super AMOLED, Full HD+ and refreshes 90 times a second. The front is protected with Gorilla Glass Victus+, a step tougher than what you are used to in this price bracket. The MediaTek Helio G99 keeps everything you do day to day running briskly. This is no phone for demanding games; for the rest you rarely notice that you are not in a pricier class.
Cameras: the difference with the A16
On the back sit three cameras: a 50 megapixel main camera with optical image stabilisation, a 5 megapixel ultra-wide and a 2 megapixel macro. That stabilisation is the reason to pick the A17 over the A16. It compensates for the shake of your hand, letting the camera gather light for longer without the photo smearing. In practice: usable evening photos and steadier handheld video. The 13 megapixel front camera is fine for selfies and video calls.
Battery, water resistance and updates
The 5,000 mAh battery charges at 25 watts over USB-C and holds out for a day with normal use. The housing is IP54: resistant to dust and splashes, not to submersion. Samsung promises six Android version upgrades and six years of security updates. At 190 grams the A17 is a fraction lighter than the A16. It has no headphone socket; a memory card does fit, in the slot of the second SIM.
A17 or A17 5G?
This model runs on 4G. The difference with the Galaxy A17 5G lies in the processor (Exynos 1330 instead of Helio G99) and in 5G support. If 4G is enough for you — and across most of the EU that holds true for most people — the ordinary A17 is the cheaper choice, with the same camera and the same screen.

Optical image stabilisation, often shortened to OIS, means the lens itself absorbs the shake of your hand. That lets the camera gather light for longer without the photo smearing. You see the difference above all in evening photos and in video you shoot while walking. Of the A-series in this price range the A17, the A17 5G and the A26 5G have it; the A06, A07 and A16 do not.
Does the Samsung Galaxy A17 have 5G?
No, this version runs on 4G. There is a separate Galaxy A17 5G with the same housing, the same screen and the same camera, but with an Exynos 1330 processor and 5G support. Across most of the EU, 4G is fast enough almost everywhere for streaming, video calls and navigation, so for many buyers the 4G version is the wiser spend.
How much storage do I need on the Galaxy A17?
For most people 128GB is plenty: room for thousands of photos, your apps and a sizeable music collection. Go for 256GB if you record a lot of video, keep series offline or want to use the phone for five years or more without ever having to clear it out. If you do fill it up later, you can add a microSD card; that does share the slot with the second SIM.
