Apple released the iPhone 16 Pro Max in September 2024, and it is the biggest iPhone of its generation: a 6.9-inch display, the A18 Pro chip, a telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom and, according to Apple, the longest battery life of any iPhone 16 model. Apple no longer sells it new, so if you want this phone, refurbished is the way to get it. Here is what to check before you buy a Refurbished iPhone 16 Pro Max.

The short version: choose the condition based on looks, because every condition works 100%. Every 16 Pro Max we sell has a battery health of at least 85%, a 2-year warranty that also covers the battery, and 30 days to change your mind. Pay close attention to the SIM version: eSIM + physical SIM card, or eSIM only. We have it in stock with 256 GB of storage.

What to check when you buy a refurbished iPhone 16 Pro Max

1. Condition: As good as new, Lightly used or Used

We grade every phone in one of three conditions, and they only describe the outside. Every phone works 100%. As good as new is indistinguishable from new at arm's length. Lightly used has small marks you only notice when you look for them. Used shows clear signs of wear, such as scratches on the frame. Right now we have the 16 Pro Max in stock in As good as new condition. On a phone this big, marks on the screen and frame are easier to spot, so if you use your phone without a case, that is the condition that suits you best. The differences are explained in our guide to the conditions.

2. Battery health: at least 85%

Every refurbished 16 Pro Max from us has a battery health of at least 85%. You can check it yourself under Settings > Battery > Battery Health. From the iPhone 15 onwards, the phone also shows the cycle count and the battery's manufacture date under Settings > General > About. Because the Pro Max has the largest battery in the 16 lineup, 85% still leaves you with a lot of capacity in absolute terms. Why 85% is a sensible threshold is explained in battery health explained. If the battery does drop sharply during the warranty period, our 2-year warranty covers it.

3. SIM version: eSIM + SIM card, or eSIM only

The iPhone 16 Pro Max comes in two versions. The European model has a tray for a physical nano-SIM card and also supports eSIM. The US model has no SIM tray and works with eSIM only. Chip, cameras, display and warranty are identical; the only difference is how you get your mobile plan onto the phone. Both can have two eSIMs active at the same time.

You choose the SIM version yourself on the product page. With eSIM only, you request an eSIM from your carrier or transfer your number through your carrier's app or website. Most major carriers in Europe support this; with a smaller or prepaid provider it is worth checking before you order. If you switch phones often or buy a local SIM card when travelling, eSIM + SIM card is more convenient. More on this in eSIM or SIM card: which should you choose?

4. Storage: 256 GB

The 16 Pro Max starts at 256 GB; there is no 128 GB version. We stock it with 256 GB. That is plenty for most people, even if you regularly shoot 4K video. If you film a lot in ProRes or want to keep all your photos and videos on the phone instead of in iCloud, keep an eye on your storage. You cannot add more later.

5. Colours

The 16 Pro Max comes in four titanium finishes: Black Titanium, White Titanium, Natural Titanium and Desert Titanium, a warm sand colour that only exists in this generation. Colour says nothing about the quality of the phone. Which colours are in stock right now is shown on the iPhone 16 Pro Max model page. For every colour per model, see all iPhone colours by model.

6. Warranty and returns

Every refurbished 16 Pro Max comes with a 2-year warranty, battery included. Apple itself gives one year of manufacturer warranty on a new phone. You also get 30 days to change your mind: if it is not right for you, send it back. You are also welcome to try it in your hand first at our shop in Nijverdal.

iPhone 16 Pro: the same chip, cameras and buttons, but with a 6.3-inch display and 28 grams lighter. It is cheaper and easier to use with one hand. What you give up is mainly screen size and battery life. If you are torn between the two, read our iPhone 16 Pro buying guide as well.

iPhone 17 Pro Max: one year newer, with the A19 Pro chip, a 48 MP telephoto camera with up to 8x optical zoom and an aluminium body. It costs more. If you take a lot of photos at a distance, that is a real difference; for everyday use the 16 Pro Max is still more than fast enough. More on the latest generation in our iPhone 17 Pro buying guide.

From the workshop: check these yourself on arrival

In our repair workshop in Nijverdal we regularly see damage on large phones after a drop onto a corner. A case with a raised edge and a screen protector are well worth it at this size. When your phone arrives, run through these points in a few minutes:

Frequently asked questions

Is the iPhone 16 Pro Max too big?

That depends on your hand and your pocket. At 6.9 inches and 227 grams it is noticeably bigger and heavier than the 16 Pro. If you watch a lot of video or read on your phone, you get used to it quickly; if you mostly type one-handed, the 16 Pro often feels nicer.

Will an eSIM-only 16 Pro Max work with my carrier?

Yes, as long as your carrier offers eSIM. There is no SIM tray, so you move your number to an eSIM. If you cannot or do not want to, choose the eSIM + SIM card version on the product page.

How long will the 16 Pro Max get updates?

Apple does not announce an end date in advance. The 16 Pro Max runs iOS 27 and supports Apple Intelligence. Apple usually supports iPhones with new iOS versions for many years, followed by security updates.

Can I sell my current phone?

Yes. Through sell your device you can see what your current phone is worth.
