You're about to buy a new device, and then you run into that question: eSIM or just a SIM card? Sounds technical, but it really makes a difference in how you use your phone every day. This article explains it clearly — no hassle.
Quick summary: An eSIM is a digital SIM card that's already built into your device; a physical SIM card is the small plastic card you know. Both work fine, but the choice depends on your device, your carrier, and your usage situation.
You've probably known a physical SIM card for years. You slide it into a tray, your carrier recognizes it, and you have signal. Simple and proven. An eSIM (embedded SIM) works differently: it's already soldered into your device and gets activated via a QR code or app. No plastic card needed anymore.
That might sound abstract, but in practice you barely notice it. Call your carrier, request an eSIM, scan the code — and you're online. Some carriers even send the activation link by email.
We see this every day in our workshop: customers who buy a refurbished iPhone and are surprised they no longer need a SIM tray. Especially with recent models, that's become completely normal.
More and more phones support eSIM, but not all of them. Here's a handy overview:
| Brand / Model | eSIM | Physical SIM card |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone XS / XR and newer | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (nano-SIM) |
| iPhone 14 (US version) | ✅ Yes | ❌ eSIM only |
| iPhone 15 / 16 / 17 (EU version) | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (nano-SIM) |
| Samsung Galaxy S21 and newer | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes (nano-SIM) |
| Samsung Galaxy A series (most) | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |
| Older devices (before 2018) | ❌ No | ✅ Yes |

The eSIM has a few real advantages that make everyday life easier. Here are the most important ones:
Honest advice: the physical SIM card still has its uses. Don't change that opinion just because eSIM is "newer."
This is the question we hear most often at The Phone Shopper. And the answer is fortunately simple: with refurbished iPhones and Samsung Galaxy devices that support eSIM, that eSIM function just works. A refurbished device is, after all, the same hardware as new — just thoroughly checked, reset, and recertified.
One thing to keep in mind: an eSIM is tied to a device, not transferable like a physical card. With a refurbished iPhone, the previous eSIM activation was wiped during the reset. You start with a clean slate and activate your own plan. That works exactly like with a new device.
Our certified technicians also check eSIM functionality on every refurbished device as part of the thorough inspection. That way you know everything checks out before you drive home — or before the package lands on your doorstep.

Want to switch to eSIM? It's easier than you think. Follow these steps:
The whole process takes less than ten minutes with most carriers. We're also happy to help if you're not sure where to look — feel free to stop by at Willem Alexanderstraat in Nijverdal.
Good question. If your device is damaged and you bring it to our , an eSIM has no effect on the repair itself. We replace your screen, battery, or charging port without your eSIM activation getting lost. The eSIM sits in the system chip and is independent of the parts we replace.
With an or a , we check after every job whether all functions — including signal and eSIM — still work correctly. We do that as standard, not as an extra.
One exception: if the motherboard needs replacing (which is rarely necessary), you lose the current eSIM link. Your carrier can reactivate it, so even then you're not out of luck. But be aware of this if you buy a second-hand device that doesn't come through a trustworthy dealer.
Switching to a device with eSIM and want to hand in your old smartphone? First remove your eSIM profile (Settings → your plan → Remove plan) and reset your device to factory settings. This protects your personal data. After that, you can trade it in with us — we'll give you a fair valuation right away and pay out within 24 hours.
Yes, absolutely. Refurbished iPhones that support eSIM (from the iPhone XS and XR onward) work fully with eSIM. The previous activation was wiped during the reset, so you start with a clean slate. Just activate your own plan using your carrier's QR code.
Generally, yes. A physical SIM card can be stolen or swapped (SIM swapping), which is a known method criminals use to take over accounts. An eSIM is built into your device and isn't as easy to copy or swap. That makes it somewhat more robust from a security standpoint.
That's easy. You remove the old eSIM profile and request an activation code from your new carrier. This is fully digital and usually takes less than fifteen minutes. No waiting for a card in the mailbox.
Yes, and that's actually one of the big advantages. You can buy a local data bundle as an eSIM from a foreign provider and activate it alongside your Dutch number. That way you still call on your own number and use local data for browsing — without high roaming costs.
All major Dutch carriers (KPN, T-Mobile, Odido, Tele2, Simpel, and others) support eSIM. Some smaller MVNOs don't yet. So check with your own carrier before buying a device without a physical SIM tray.
In practice, barely. The difference in battery consumption between eSIM and a physical SIM card is negligible. Want to know more about battery life and battery health for refurbished devices? Every device at The Phone Shopper has at least 85% battery capacity — if it's below that, we replace the battery before sale.
