Tips: How to Transfer Your WhatsApp Conversations to a New Phone
When you buy a new smartphone, you'll probably want to transfer a lot of information from your old device to your new one — including photos, emails, and of course your WhatsApp conversations. The last thing you want is to lose your entire chat history.
WhatsApp offers plenty of options for transferring your chat history to a new phone, regardless of which operating system you use.
This article walks you through the process for each operating system.
Whether you're staying on the same platform or switching between them, there's a solution available.
We've rounded up the most common methods below.
iOS
To transfer your WhatsApp chat history from your old iPhone to a new iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to "Settings".
Then select "Chat Settings", followed by "Chat Backup".
Create a backup — your chat history will now be uploaded to iCloud.
Once you install WhatsApp on your new iPhone and enter your phone number,
the app will ask whether you'd like to restore from a backup.
Select yes, and within a few minutes all your old conversations will be right back where you left them.
Android
Transferring your conversations from one Android phone to another is also fairly straightforward.
In WhatsApp, go to "Settings" and open "Chat Settings", then create a backup of your chat history.
You can save this backup to your SD card or to your phone's internal storage. Next, install WhatsApp on your new phone.
If you used internal storage, copy the folder sdcard/WhatsApp/ to the same location on your new device.
You can do this using your PC or a file manager app for Android such as ES File Explorer Manager.
If you used an SD card, simply insert it into your new phone.
Log in with the same phone number and WhatsApp will ask if you'd like to "Restore". Choose that option.
Keep in mind: if you saved your chat history to an SD card, the card must be compatible with your new Android smartphone.
It's also possible to upload your backup to your Google account.
This way, you won't need any additional apps or have to dig through folders to find your chats.
To do this, go to "Settings" in WhatsApp, open "Chat Settings", and create a backup.
This time, choose the option to upload the backup to the Google Drive linked to your Google account.
Once you've installed WhatsApp on your new device and confirmed your phone number,
WhatsApp will ask whether you'd like to restore from your Google Drive backup.
Tap 'Yes' and within a few minutes all your messages and images will be available on your new Android device.
iOS to Android
Switching from an iPhone to an Android phone? Transferring your chat history gets a little trickier in that case.
It is possible, however, because WhatsApp stores all your contacts and chats in a single file on your iPhone.
You can extract that file from a backup and import it onto your Android device.
Start by creating a backup of your iPhone using iTunes on your PC or Mac.
Then visit www.iphonebackupextractor.com and click "Download Free Edition Now".
Select your operating system and launch the programme.
You'll now be able to read the data from your iPhone backup stored on your computer or in iTunes.
In the "Expert Mode" tab, select the file "ChatStorage.sqlite". Click "Extract" and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Now it's time to set up your Android phone. Install WhatsApp on your new device, open the app and go to "Settings".
Select "Back Up Chats", then close the app.
Connect your Android smartphone to your PC and copy the files from your "extract" folder to the root folder on your Android device.
Next, install Wazzap Migrator on your phone.
Open the app — it will automatically search for an archive file and ask whether you'd like to move it.
Tap "OK". Close the Migrator, then uninstall WhatsApp from your phone.
Reinstall WhatsApp from the Play Store and choose "Restore" when prompted on startup.
You'll find that your entire WhatsApp chat history has been successfully transferred from your iPhone to your Android smartphone.
If you also want to transfer your media files, make sure to select the file
net.whatsapp.WhatsApp\Library\Media in iPhone Backup Extractor as well.
You can add this folder to WhatsApp on your Android phone by following the same steps as above.
Please note that the app is not free — it costs approximately €4. The upside is that you'll be taking all your data with you to your new device.
Android to iOS
Unfortunately, transferring your WhatsApp chat history from Android to iOS is not possible without downloading a costly programme that may not be fully reliable. WhatsApp itself states that this transfer is not supported. If you've managed to find a solution, we'd love to hear about it!
