Your iPhone works fine, but you wonder: how long will my iPhone keep getting updates? Fair question. Once Apple stops shipping new iOS versions, security updates continue for a while, but banking apps and payment services eventually demand a newer iOS. Below is where each model stands in September 2026, with iOS 27 as the benchmark.
In short: iOS 27 (September 2026) runs on the same devices as iOS 26: the iPhone 11 and newer and the iPhone SE of 2020 and 2022. The iPhone XS, XS Max and XR were dropped with iOS 26 and stay on iOS 18. Apple supports an iPhone with major iOS versions for six to seven years on average. If you buy refurbished, go for at least an iPhone 13: it has years ahead of it.

As of September 2026. Apple released iOS 27 on 14 September 2026; the list of supported devices is exactly the same as for iOS 26.
Apple does not announce an end date, but the pattern has been stable for years: an iPhone gets six to seven years of new major iOS versions, followed by one to two years of standalone security updates. The 2019 iPhone 11 still runs iOS 27 in 2026; the 2018 iPhone XR got iOS 18 as its last major version. The chip matters most: devices sharing a chip stop together. That is why the iPhone SE (2020) tracks the iPhone 11 (both A13) and the SE (2022) tracks the iPhone 13 (both A15).

Our rule of thumb: buy a model with at least three major iOS versions ahead of it. In 2026 that is the iPhone 13 (2021) as the affordable floor, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 as the middle ground, and the iPhone 16 or 16 Pro if you want Apple Intelligence. The iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 are still fine phones for little money, but expect them to be dropped first. Every device we sell comes with a 2-year warranty, even if Apple stops updates earlier.
Go to Settings, General, About: the iOS version is listed there. Under Settings, General, Software Update you see whether a newer version is available. If no update shows while your device is listed on iOS 27 in the table, check that you have enough free storage (at least 6 GB) and that the device is charging.
Yes. The iPhone 11 runs iOS 27 and gets updates at least until the next major version. Together with the SE (2020) it is the oldest model on iOS 27, so do not count on many more years.
No new iOS versions: iOS 18 was the last. Security patches for iOS 18 still appear, but fewer and fewer apps support the device.
The iPhone 13 (A15) runs iOS 27 and, based on Apple's pattern, should get two to three more major versions. For daily use you are fine until 2028 or 2029.
