The refurbished iPhone 16e is Apple's successor to the SE line: a budget-friendly model with the latest A18 chip, but without the extras of the pricier 16 series. If what you mainly want is speed and future-proofing at a lower price, this is a compelling option.
Despite its entry-level price, the iPhone 16e runs on the same A18 chip as the regular iPhone 16, which makes it capable of Apple Intelligence and years of software updates. A few choices were made to keep the price down: there is a single 48MP camera instead of a dual setup, the screen has a classic notch rather than the Dynamic Island, and MagSafe accessories with magnetic alignment are not supported. USB-C is of course on board.

If magnetic accessories matter to you, a case with a built-in magnet ring can partly bridge the gap.
