iPhone 16 vs iPhone 17: finally a real generational leap

Where the step from iPhone 15 to 16 was mostly under the hood, the iPhone 17 is the biggest leap for the regular models in years. For the first time, the standard model gets the display that was exclusive to the Pros for years. Here are the facts — and who should still buy the 16.

The display is the story
You see the biggest difference within one second of scrolling: the 17's 120Hz ProMotion display is twice as smooth as the 16's 60Hz. On top of that, the screen is bigger (6.3 versus 6.1 inch), much brighter in the sun (up to 3,000 nits), and the new anti-reflective coating makes it easier to read outdoors. Anyone who has held a Pro model or a modern Android next to a 60Hz iPhone knows exactly what this means.
Camera and charging
The ultrawide goes from 12 to 48 megapixels — landscapes and macros visibly gain detail. The front camera jumps to 18 megapixels with Center Stage, which automatically keeps you in frame on video calls. And the battery charges much faster: 50% in 20 minutes, plus 25W wireless via Qi2.
Why the 16 can still be the smart buy
In fairness: the iPhone 16 has the same 8GB and fully supports Apple Intelligence — software-wise you are set just as well for years. If 60Hz is fine by you (you only miss what you have seen) and you would rather keep the price difference, the refurbished 16 is an excellent buy.
Our advice
Go for the iPhone 17 if you want to see the difference every day: the display alone justifies the leap, and you are buying the newest model — so the longest future.
