Anyone shopping for a refurbished iPhone quickly runs into the same question: do I go for the iPhone 15, or do I spend a little more on the iPhone 16? It's a question we get in our shop every week. Our honest answer is more nuanced than what you'll read on most comparison sites, so let's go through the differences one by one.
What's the same? More than you'd think
Let's start with something you rarely hear: the similarities. Both phones have a 6.1-inch OLED display with Dynamic Island, both charge via USB-C, both have a 48-megapixel main camera, and both feel virtually identical in the hand. Put them side by side and most people only spot the difference when they flip them over: the iPhone 16's cameras are arranged vertically rather than diagonally.
Worth noting too: the iPhone 15 launched in 2023 and will receive software updates for years to come. You're not buying a device that's on its way out.
Difference 1: the chip — and why it actually matters this time
We usually say: in day-to-day use, you'll barely notice a newer chip. That's still true here — the A16 in the iPhone 15 is still lightning fast. But the A18 in the iPhone 16 has one practical consequence: it supports Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI feature suite. The iPhone 15 won't get those features, even via a future update. If that doesn't interest you, feel free to ignore this difference. But if you're planning to use your phone for four or five years, be aware that Apple will be tying a growing number of new features to that platform.
Difference 2: two new buttons
The iPhone 16 adds an Action Button (customisable for silent mode, torch, camera, recordings and more) and a touch-sensitive Camera Control on the side, letting you quickly take photos and zoom. Handy? Definitely. Essential? No. The mute switch on the iPhone 15 has been doing its job reliably since the very first iPhone.
Difference 3: camera performance in real life
Both main cameras are excellent. The iPhone 16 has two genuine advantages: its ultra-wide lens can autofocus, which means it can shoot macro photos (something the 15 can't do), and it performs slightly better in low light. For most holiday snaps and family photos, the results from both phones are barely distinguishable.
Difference 4: battery life
The iPhone 16 has a slightly larger battery and a more efficient chip, and you do notice it — it gets through the day more comfortably. The difference isn't a full day versus half a day; think more like an hour or two of extra screen time. Difference 5: how long will they last?
Apple typically supports iPhones with iOS updates for many years — devices from 2018 received six to seven years of new versions. The one-year gap in release dates means, in practice, that the 16 is expected to receive updates for roughly one year longer. Planning to use your phone for three years? It makes no difference. Planning to keep it for six? Then it's worth factoring in.
Which storage option should you choose?
Both models are typically available refurbished in 128 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB. Our advice is the same for both: 128 GB is plenty if you back up your photos to the cloud and aren't a heavy gamer; if you're unsure, go for 256 GB. The price gap between storage tiers is often smaller on refurbished models than on new ones, so upgrading is relatively affordable.
And then there's the price
This is where it gets interesting. Refurbished, the price difference between the iPhone 15 and 16 is typically around €100 to €150, depending on storage and condition. So the real question is: are Apple Intelligence, macro photography, two extra buttons, and a bit more battery life worth that amount to you?

- Choose the iPhone 15 if you simply want a modern, fast iPhone that'll serve you well for years to come and offer the best value for money. For most people, this is the smarter buy.
- Choose the iPhone 16 if you plan to keep your phone for a long time, love photography (macro shots, low-light images), or don't want to miss out on Apple Intelligence.
