You want to snap a quick photo, and then: "Storage almost full." Frustrating. Especially when it's already the third time this week. A full phone storage is one of the most common complaints we hear in our shop in Nijverdal — and luckily there are several ways to fix it. Sometimes with a simple clean-up, sometimes with a smarter phone.
Quick summary: if your phone storage is full, you can free up space by moving photos to the cloud, deleting apps and clearing cache files. If that isn't enough, a refurbished phone with more storage is often the smartest and cheapest solution.
Why does your storage fill up so fast?
A few years ago, 32 GB seemed more than enough. These days you burn through it without noticing. Apps get bigger with every update, videos eat up gigabytes and WhatsApp quietly hoards years of photos and voice messages. We see it every day in our workshop: customers coming in with a phone that barely boots, simply because the internal storage is packed to the brim.
The biggest culprits are almost always the same:
- Photos and videos — one minute of 4K video is already around 400 MB.
- WhatsApp media — after a year of family group chats, this quickly creeps up towards 5 to 10 GB.
- Apps and games — popular games like Call of Duty Mobile easily demand 3-4 GB.
- Cache files — temporary data from apps you stopped using ages ago.
- Downloads — films, podcasts and PDF files you once saved offline and forgot about.
What can you clean up right now?
Before you reach for a new phone, it pays to do a thorough clean-up first. This step-by-step plan works on both iPhone and Android:
- Delete unused apps. Go to your settings and sort apps by storage use. You'll be amazed how much space is taken up by apps you haven't touched in months.
- Clear out WhatsApp media. Open WhatsApp → Settings → Storage usage. You can see per chat which files take up the most space and delete them in bulk.
- Move photos and videos to the cloud. Google Photos (free up to 15 GB) or iCloud are your best friends. Turn on automatic backup and then delete the local copies.
- Clear app caches. On Android: Settings → Apps → select an app → Storage → Clear cache. On iPhone you clear the cache by deleting and reinstalling a browser app, or via the app's own settings.
- Delete offline downloads. Check Spotify, Netflix, YouTube and your Files app for downloaded content you watched long ago.
- Empty your bin. Both the Photos app and the Files app have a bin you need to empty manually. Easy to forget, but it still counts.
In our experience, people free up an average of 4 to 8 GB with this plan. Sometimes that's enough, sometimes it isn't.

Can you expand your storage?
This is where it gets disappointing for many people. iPhones have no memory card slot — the storage that's built in is all you get. On Android phones a microSD card is sometimes an option, but more and more brands (including the newer Samsung Galaxy models) are dropping that slot too. So always check your model's specifications before buying a memory card.

- Turn on automatic cloud backup for photos and videos, then delete the local copies.
- Set a monthly reminder to clear out WhatsApp media.
- Don't download films or music offline if you're only going to watch them once anyway.
- Delete apps right away if you haven't used them for two weeks.
- For your next phone, deliberately choose 128 GB as a minimum — the few euros extra are always worth it.
Frequently asked questions
What should I do if my phone storage is full but I can't find anything to delete?
That happens more often than you'd think. Apps sometimes store gigabytes of system data you don't directly see. Try deleting the app and reinstalling it — that wipes all hidden cache. On iPhone you can also go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage: iOS itself gives recommendations on what you can clean up. If that doesn't help, a phone with more storage really is the next step.
Can I expand an iPhone with a memory card?
No, iPhones don't support external memory cards. The internal storage is fixed and cannot be expanded. The only real solution is cloud storage (such as iCloud or Google Photos) or switching to an iPhone with a higher storage capacity.
How much storage do I need if I take a lot of photos?
Do you regularly take photos and videos? Then 128 GB is a good minimum, but 256 GB gives you real breathing room. Especially if you also shoot in RAW or ProRes on a newer iPhone, that eats storage at a pace that will surprise you.
