Buying a refurbished smartphone sounds smart, and it is, provided you know what to look for. Because the difference between a device that lasts two years without a hitch and one that comes back after three months with a black stripe on the screen comes down to a handful of concrete checkpoints. Here you'll read exactly what they are.
In short: you recognise a properly refurbished smartphone by a documented inspection, a battery health of at least 85%, an honestly communicated condition grade, a warranty of at least one year and a transparent seller with its own workshop.
Why the quality of refurbished smartphones varies so much
Last week a young man came into our shop in Nijverdal with a phone he had bought two months earlier through an online marketplace. "Refurbished", the listing said. But the battery didn't last a day, the screen had a yellow glow along the edge and the charging port made a crackling noise. That's not a refurbished device, that's a second-hand device with a nice label.
The problem is that "refurbished" isn't a protected term. Anyone can use it. One seller runs a fifty-point inspection and replaces parts where needed; another wraps a new case around an unchecked device and calls it done. So it's up to you, the buyer, to tell the difference. Fortunately there are clear signals.
Checkpoint 1: battery health
The battery is the heart of a smartphone and at the same time the part that wears out fastest. A device with 70% battery health may seem functional, but in practice you'll barely get through the working day. At The Phone Shopper we have a hard limit: every refurbished device has at least 85% battery capacity. If it's below that, we replace the battery before sale. Full stop.
Ask every seller specifically: "What is the battery health of this device?" A reliable seller gives you a percentage straight away. If someone hesitates, gives a vague answer or says "we don't know exactly", you know enough. On iPhones, also check for yourself in the settings under Battery → Battery Health. On an Android device you can check this via dialler codes or a free app such as AccuBattery.
Checkpoint 2: the condition grade, and what it really means
A good seller works with clear, honestly described conditions. In our web shop we use four categories: New, As good as new, Lightly used and Used. Each category has a concrete description of what you can and cannot expect in terms of signs of use.
Beware of vague terms like "excellent", "top condition" or arbitrary letter grades without explanation. They say nothing. What you want to know: are there scratches on the screen? Dents on the sides? Has the device ever had water damage? A reliable seller simply tells you, even when it isn't flattering. That is exactly the honesty that builds trust in the long run.
Checkpoint 3: the inspection. What was checked and replaced?
This is where many sellers stay vague, yet it may be the most important point. A genuinely refurbished device has been through a structured inspection. Concretely that means:
- Screen quality checked (pixels, touch sensitivity, colour reproduction)
- All buttons and ports tested (volume, power, charging port, SIM tray)
- Front and rear camera checked for function and image quality
- Speakers and microphone tested
- Sensors checked (face recognition, fingerprint scanner, gyroscope)
- Water damage check via internal indicators
- Software fully reset and updated to the latest version
- IMEI checked for blocks or stolen status
We see this every day in our workshop: devices that look perfect at first glance, but where the camera secretly flickers or the speaker crackles at high volume. Without a systematic inspection you miss that. So always ask the seller: "Do you have a checklist or inspection report?"
Checkpoint 4: warranty and returns policy
Warranty is the most tangible indicator of trust. A seller who stands behind their product gives a warranty. No warranty, or only 30 days? That says enough about the seller's confidence in their own devices.
At The Phone Shopper you get a 2-year warranty on every refurbished device as standard. We also offer 30 days to change your mind and free shipping from €150. Those aren't marketing words: it's what's in our terms and what we deliver every day.
A fair returns policy is also a sign of refurbished quality. If a seller makes returns difficult, sets awkward conditions or only offers repair instead of exchange, that's a red flag.
Where do you buy a good-quality refurbished smartphone?
Where you buy matters at least as much as the device itself. Here's a comparison of the most common options:
| Type of seller |
Inspection |
Warranty |
Repair possible? |
Transparency |
| Specialist phone shop (e.g. The Phone Shopper) |
Own workshop, certified technicians |
2 years |
Yes, also afterwards |
High |
| Large web shop (generalist) |
Varies, often outsourced |
1 year |
Sometimes, via return |
Medium |
| Marketplace / private seller |
None or minimal |
None |
No |
Low |
| Official manufacturer (e.g. Apple Certified Refurbished) |
Extensive, factory standard |
1 year |
No, back to manufacturer |
High |
In our experience more and more customers consciously choose a specialist with a real workshop over an anonymous web shop. And with good reason: you can hold the device, ask a real technician questions and go straight back if there's a problem. That's a different experience from asking a chatbot for help.
Step by step: how to check a refurbished device yourself
Whether you're standing in the shop or have a device delivered at home, go through this plan before you finally agree:
- Check the battery health via the settings (iPhone) or an app (Android). At least 85% is the norm.
- Test the screen on a dark and a white background for dead pixels, yellow patches or ghosting from the old screen.
- Press all the buttons and test the volume buttons, the power button and the mute switch (on iPhones).
- Plug in a charging cable and check that the charging port works without wobbling.
- Take a photo and a selfie to test both cameras for sharpness and colour.
- Call a number to check the microphone and speaker.
- Check the IMEI via imei.info: the device must not be blocked or stolen.
- Check that the software is fresh: a refurbished device should be delivered clean and updated.
Does something fail in this plan? Then you have a valid reason to refuse or return the device. A good seller won't have a problem with that.
Refurbished or new: when is refurbished really the smartest choice?
Honestly, a refurbished device isn't always the best choice. If you want the very latest camera features, the newest chip or the certainty of a factory warranty, new is sometimes more logical. But in most cases a device one or two generations old does everything you need, for a fraction of the price.
A one-year-old refurbished iPhone hardly differs from a brand-new one, except on your bank account. And because we give a 2-year warranty on every device and always bring the battery up to standard, the risk for the buyer is minimal.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between refurbished and second-hand?
A second-hand device is a used device resold without being checked. A refurbished device has had a professional inspection, may have had parts replaced and comes with a warranty. But the word "refurbished" doesn't say everything: the quality depends on who refurbishes it and how thoroughly. Always check whether an inspection checklist, warranty and fair returns policy come with it.
How high should battery health be on a refurbished smartphone?
The minimum battery health you should accept on a refurbished device is 85%. Below that you'll notice in daily use that the phone runs out too fast. At The Phone Shopper 85% is our hard lower limit: if a battery is lower, we replace it before sale. Always check this yourself via the settings or an app before you agree.
Can I have a refurbished smartphone repaired if something goes wrong?
Yes, and that is exactly why a specialist with a workshop has an advantage over an anonymous web shop. At The Phone Shopper you have an in-house workshop with certified technicians in Nijverdal. If something goes wrong within the warranty period, we solve it: screen repair, battery replacement, charging problems. See our full for an overview of what we can do.
Are refurbished iPhones more reliable than refurbished Android devices?
That depends more on the seller than on the brand. Both iPhones and Samsung Galaxy devices can be refurbished excellently. iPhones have the advantage that iOS is supported for a long time, which means an older iPhone still gets security updates for years. But a well-refurbished Samsung Galaxy is just as reliable a choice. Browse our range of refurbished smartphones for both brands.
What does "As good as new" mean at The Phone Shopper?
Our "As good as new" condition means the device has barely any or no visible signs of use. The screen is scratch-free, the housing looks fresh and all functions work perfectly. Battery health is at least 85%. These are devices that have hardly been used, often returns or trade-ins after a short time. So you get a device that looks new, for a considerably lower price.
Can I trade in a refurbished device if I want to upgrade?
Certainly. Via our trade-in service we assess every device fairly and pay within 24 hours. Brand or condition doesn't matter, we always look at what the device is worth. So you can simply trade in your refurbished device later for a newer model, without being stuck with an unsellable device.
