Your iPhone screen is smashed, the battery drains in no time or the charging port has stopped working. So the hunt for a repair shop begins — and before long you run into terms like "genuine iPhone parts", "OEM" or "compatible". What do they actually mean? And does it matter what goes into your device?
In short: iPhone parts come in three categories: genuine Apple parts, OEM parts (made by the manufacturer of the original) and compatible third-party parts. For critical components such as the screen and the battery, the choice makes a big difference in quality and user experience. At The Phone Shopper we work exclusively with high-quality parts that we test first, before they go into your device.
What are genuine, OEM and compatible iPhone parts?
Let's start with the basics, because these terms get thoroughly mixed up in the market — sometimes on purpose, to make cheap parts sound more expensive.
Genuine Apple parts
These are parts that come directly from Apple or through the official Apple Service Provider programme. They are identical to what is already inside your iPhone. Apple itself calls them "genuine Apple parts" and sells them through Apple Stores and authorised repairers. Downside: the price is considerably higher, and not every repairer has access to this programme.
OEM parts
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. These are parts made by the same manufacturer that also produces for Apple — think display panels from Samsung Display or battery cells from TDK — but not packaged or certified by Apple. In practice, the quality is often virtually the same as genuine. The difference lies in the software pairing: since the iPhone 12, Apple has used a system in which parts are "paired" to the logic board, so a non-certified screen or battery may trigger a message in the settings.
Compatible parts
Compatible parts are entirely third-party. Quality varies enormously here — from near-genuine to downright poor. A cheap compatible screen may look sharp in a photo, but show colour deviations, be less responsive to touch and discolour after just three months. For accessories such as cases or cables, compatible is perfectly fine. For screens, batteries and camera modules? That's where caution is warranted.
When does the choice of iPhone parts really matter?
Not every part deserves the same debate. We see the difference in our workshop every day, and the honest message is: it depends on the part.

Last week a customer from Almelo brought his iPhone 13 in to us. The screen had been replaced three months earlier at a cheap repair shop — compatible part, €40 cheaper than with us. But the screen was already showing lines and the touch was responding unreliably. In the end he was still better off with us. We see this a few times every week.
What does iOS do with non-genuine iPhone parts?
Over the past few years Apple has built in more and more software checks. This is what you may actually encounter:
- Battery message: from the iPhone XS onwards, iOS shows the message "Important Battery Message — unknown part" if the battery was not fitted by Apple or a certified repairer. This is a message, not a block — the phone simply keeps working.
- True Tone disappears: when a screen is replaced with a non-paired screen, True Tone (automatic white balance adjustment) may stop working, unless the technician transfers the microcontroller.
- Face ID stops working: the Face ID sensor is cryptographically paired to the logic board. Nobody outside Apple can restore that pairing if the sensor itself is broken — regardless of which part you use. With us this is not a problem as long as the sensor is intact; Face ID then simply works after a screen repair.
- Camera messages: when the rear camera is replaced, iOS may show a message that the camera is not verified.
In we handle the microcontroller transfer wherever possible, so you experience as little inconvenience from these pairings as possible. For specific models and situations we are open about what can and cannot be restored — we find that more honest than surprising you after the repair.
How do you recognise a good repairer that uses quality iPhone parts?
This may well be the most practical question. Good indicators:
- Warranty on the repair: a reliable repairer gives at least 3 months' warranty on parts and labour. At The Phone Shopper we give a warranty on every repair we carry out.
- Transparency about the part: just ask: "Do you use genuine, OEM or compatible parts?" A good repairer answers directly and explains the difference.
- No vague terms: "premium quality" or "A+ grade" means nothing. OEM or genuine says everything.
- Price is a signal, not a guarantee: cheaper doesn't necessarily mean worse, but a €25 screen repair is almost never possible with a quality part.
- An in-house workshop: repairers with their own workshop — like us in Nijverdal — stand behind their work themselves. A drop-off point that outsources repairs has less control over what goes into your device.
What do the different types of iPhone parts cost in a repair?
Prices vary by model and part, but as an indication for a popular model such as the iPhone 13:
- Screen repair (OEM/genuine): from €99 — done while you wait, on average 30 to 45 minutes
- Battery replacement (OEM): from €59 — including a check of the battery health
- Charging port (compatible): from €39
- Rear camera (OEM): from €79, depending on the model

Refurbished iPhones: which parts are inside?
If you are considering buying a refurbished iPhones instead of repairing, this is relevant too. At The Phone Shopper we check every refurbished device on more than 50 points. Did a part fail to meet our quality threshold? Then we replace it before sale — with quality parts, not the cheapest on the market.
Batteries are a good example: every refurbished device we sell has at least 85% battery capacity. If the health is below that, we replace the battery before sale. That way you know for sure your battery will last. All our refurbished devices come with a 2 year warranty, which also covers any replaced parts.
Would you rather trade in your old iPhone than repair it? Through our trade-in page you get an instant valuation and payment within 24 hours.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between OEM and genuine iPhone parts?
Genuine parts come directly from Apple or through its officially certified programme. OEM parts are made by the same manufacturers that also produce for Apple, but are not certified or packaged by Apple. In practice, the quality of good OEM parts is virtually the same as genuine, but on some models iOS may show a message that the part is not verified.
Does Face ID still work after a screen repair?
Yes, if the Face ID sensor itself is not damaged, Face ID simply works after a screen repair. The sensor is cryptographically paired to the logic board of your specific iPhone. As long as that sensor stays intact and we transfer the microcontroller correctly, you won't notice a thing. Is the sensor itself broken? Then unfortunately Face ID cannot be restored outside Apple — that applies to every repairer worldwide.
Are compatible iPhone parts always bad?
Not necessarily, but the quality differences are enormous. For accessories such as cases or charging cables, compatible is perfectly fine. For screens, batteries and camera modules we advise against compatible parts, unless you know for certain they come from a reputable manufacturer. In our workshop we see the consequences of cheap compatible screens that cause problems after just a few months every single week.
Do I lose my warranty if I have my iPhone repaired?
Apple's manufacturer warranty is voided by a repair outside an Apple-certified repairer. Do you have AppleCare+? Then it's smart to check this before walking into another shop. If you no longer have an active Apple warranty (devices older than 1-2 years), it makes little practical difference. We always give a warranty on our own repairs, so you are never left empty-handed.
How long does a repair with quality parts take?
We carry out most repairs while you wait — a screen or battery replacement is on average done in 30 to 45 minutes. We always take the specific situation of your device into account. More complex repairs, such as water damage or a camera module, may take longer. Call ahead on +31 548 549 536 and we'll give you an honest time estimate.
Can I also have Samsung parts replaced with you?
Absolutely. Besides iPhone repairs we also carry out . Screen, battery, charging port — here too we work with quality parts and give a warranty on the repair. Check our repairs page for all models and prices, or simply drop in at Nijverdal.
