What to do with a water damaged smartphone?

A smartphone is of course something you take everywhere with you:
funny photos of someone on the toilet have to go on Facebook,
the smartphone comes along into the shower, because what if you miss a call, and plenty of people make calls in the rain too.
But because we have the device in our hands so much, the chance grows that it comes into contact with steam,
moisture and other liquids.
What many people seem to forget at that moment is
that electronics and water (or other liquids) do not go well together, and that can result in problems with your smartphone.
Something that happens regularly, and that many people do not properly understand, is when your smartphone is lying in the bathroom,
you take a hot shower or bath and a lot of condensation builds up.
Because those tiny damp particles spread through the room, there is a good chance they work their way into your smartphone as well.
That will not have immediate consequences, but there is every chance the device will start causing problems over time.
The result of this is called oxidation, which means that at first the moisture does not really cause any damage,
but the longer it sits there and works its way into certain components, the more it oxidises.
This usually results in a smartphone that works badly or not at all.
Alongside drop and pressure damage, is the most common complaint,
partly because water damage falls outside the warranty on every smartphone.
Are there smartphones that are protected against this?
Yes and no. There are smartphones that keep water out reasonably well to very well.
A number of recent smartphones that are said to be protected:
Samsung Galaxy S5
Samsung Galaxy Xcover 3
Motorola Moto G 4G
- Sony Xperia Z line ( every Sony Xperia Z should be protected against it )
Please note, we say that they are said to be water resistant.
Naturally there are more factors involved.
It is important that all covers are properly closed, so no water can enter the device through a charging port.
By now we have received several complaints from Sony users who say they followed all the guidelines and still ended up with a faulty device.
So it remains entirely at your own risk, not least because you cannot prove that all the covers were properly closed.
This means that if the hardware inside the device comes into contact with water, the risk of damage is still there.
Below is an image of oxidation on a circuit board.
What to do if your smartphone has water damage?
- First switch the device off completely
- If possible, remove the battery
- Place it in a bowl of rice
What not to do if your smartphone has water damage?
- Do not use the device!
- Do not put the device on the radiator, as this speeds up oxidation, which is exactly the biggest problem with water damage.
- Do not think: my phone still works, so it will keep working.
The chance that the device fails in the short or long term is far greater than the chance that it keeps working.
Unfortunately, more and more phones such as the iPhone and also Samsung,
HTC, Sony and so on no longer have an easily removable battery.
Even though that has plenty of advantages, since these are improved batteries,
compared with a replaceable battery it is a major drawback with water damage. If you have an iPhone or a Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge with water damage, for example, it is very difficult to get the battery out.
ThePhoneShopper repairs water damaged phones!
If you have a phone with water damage, we advise you to have it cleaned before the problems appear.
It can lead to short circuits, and those can have very serious consequences for how your smartphone works.
Almost every phone that comes in with water damage leaves us in full working order!
It is rare for us to have a water damaged device we cannot repair,
and that is usually down to too many short circuits burning out too many components.
The tips given above under "what to do if your smartphone has water damage" are not solutions!
They are tricks people use to delay the damage.
A bowl of rice, for instance, does not remove all the moisture, only part of it.
So do not assume that your device is ready to go again after a day in a bowl of rice.
ThePhoneShopper advises you to come by as soon as possible with water damage to have the device cleaned.
ThePhoneShopper uses 2 cleaning methods:
the first is done by hand with an anti static fluid, after which the device goes into a "special" bath that removes the residue using sound waves
and a cleaning agent.
