Why can replacing a phone screen be expensive?
If we look on Google at repair companies for a particular device, we see that the prices vary widely.
One company does it for €50 while another charges €150.
Where does the difference come from?
Some companies take the risk of replacing only the glass (touchscreen) or of using imitation parts,
and that has only 1 advantage: the price.
A number of drawbacks of replacing only the glass:
- The warranty on the device is void immediately
- There is a good chance the glass panel will come loose sooner or later
- If the device is water resistant, such as a Samsung S5 or the Xperia Z line,
it will NO longer be water resistant
- The quality is a lot lower, which means: a higher chance of scratches and cracks.
Why is ThePhoneShopper slightly more expensive than the rest for some repairs?
- ThePhoneShopper uses original parts only
(unless stated otherwise, as on some iPhones we offer the choice between original and high quality imitation,
the difference is still in the quality.
Where we give 3 months warranty on "imitation", we give 1 year warranty on original)
- Especially on the more recent models, the LCD and touch (glass) form 1 complete module
(this immediately makes the price a lot higher, as most of the money sits in the LCD / display underneath the glass)
- The warranty on the device is retained
- 1 year warranty on an original screen
- If the device is water resistant, it stays that way!
- ESD-safe workplace ( the floor, the table and the tools are all ESD approved )
- Certified technicians
Can ThePhoneShopper replace only the glass as well?
Yes, ThePhoneShopper can do this, but we do not.
Partly because replacing only the glass brings more drawbacks than advantages.
As mentioned above, the only advantage is the price.
Yet the price pales in comparison with all the drawbacks it brings.
Some time ago ThePhoneShopper ran a test by giving customers the following choice:
for a "low" amount, and in consultation with the customer, only the glass panel was replaced,
and if any problems arose ThePhoneShopper still fitted the original (complete) part at its own expense.
Because the percentage of phones that came back was so high, we decided never to do this again.
Because ThePhoneShopper considers the warranty one of the most important aspects of a repair, we decided to use only the complete
(original) parts, exactly as the brand manufacturer (Samsung, Sony, HTC, etc.) supplies them.
For these reasons we no longer offer the option of replacing the glass only.
Why are some screen repairs at ThePhoneShopper possible at a low price after all?
On older phones in particular, the glass and the LCD (the display underneath the glass) consist of 2 separate parts.
On the HTC Desire Z, for example, "no" complete parts exist and you are obliged to replace the glass separately,
so on these devices the cost is a lot lower.
On virtually every device that has come onto the market in the past 5 years, however,
complete modules are used exclusively, which means:
LCD, touch (glass) and frame are 1 module, supplied that way by the manufacturer.
On most devices older than 5 years, the parts were developed separately from one another and can be replaced individually without
any risk.
Samsung is 1 of the first manufacturers to start using complete modules.
On the iPhone we have seen this since the iPhone 4.
Odd situations when an original part cracks spontaneously
Because ThePhoneShopper offers a generous warranty, we sometimes see customers who have had a with us and
a few weeks / months later have a crack and want it replaced again.
We do not give any warranty on drop / pressure damage that has occurred again after the screen was replaced.
The warranty lapses in the event of new damage caused by the user.
Exceptions:
As many of you will know the bedside table story:
my phone was on the bedside table when I went to sleep and when I woke up the whole screen was shattered out of nowhere.
These are very difficult situations. ThePhoneShopper will first assume it is user damage, but there are exceptions.
If the manufacturer is aware that the screen can crack spontaneously, we can still replace the part provided it meets the manufacturer's guidelines.
That way we can submit a warranty claim to the manufacturer so that we get the costs back.
Guidelines of the manufacturer:
The manufacturer tells us where to look to see whether or not it is a manufacturing fault.
Fortunately we have hardly ever come across this,
because only 1 or 2 devices on the market have had this problem,
one of which was a particular type of the Sony Xperia Z.
That model was already struggling with this problem from day one.
None of the parts ThePhoneShopper now receives from Sony have this problem any more.
At the moment we are not aware of a single brand or model that suffers from this problem,
yet ThePhoneShopper still thinks it is worth giving more information about it.
Warranty on these repairs
Drop, impact and pressure damage, moisture and water damage, repairs or work carried out by others and normal wear and tear (including burn-in on an OLED screen) are not covered.
This is our own warranty, on top of your statutory rights. Those always apply: if something is wrong that is not caused by use or damage, we will solve it free of charge.
