You pull your old Lightning cable out of the drawer, go to charge your new iPhone — and it simply doesn't fit. Welcome to Apple's USB-C era. Since the iPhone 15 series, every new iPhone has a USB-C connector, and that changes more than just which cable you pack for a trip. But what does the USB-C iPhone actually mean for you, your accessories and your day-to-day use?
Quick summary: All iPhones from the iPhone 15 onwards have USB-C instead of Lightning. That means faster charging (on the right models), sharing universal cables with your laptop or Android phone, and saying goodbye to your old Lightning gear — but don't worry, the transition is easier than you might think.
Why did Apple switch to USB-C?
Apple stuck with the Lightning connector for nearly ten years. Convenient for Apple, less so for the rest of the world. EU legislation mandated that all smartphones must have a USB-C connector from late 2024 onwards. Apple essentially had no choice.
But honestly? USB-C is simply better. Higher data speeds, more power for charging, and — perhaps the best part — one cable standard for all your devices. Your MacBook, iPad, Android phone and now your iPhone too: all USB-C. In our workshop, we're already seeing far fewer customers coming in with a broken Lightning port, simply because USB-C is built to be more robust.
What's the difference between USB-C on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16?
Not every USB-C iPhone is the same. This is something a lot of people overlook, and it can genuinely matter for how you use your phone:

For everyday use — charging, transferring photos — you'll barely notice the difference. But if you're shooting ProRes video on your iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro and want to write it directly to an external SSD, every gigabit counts. Something to keep in mind if you're into photography or videography.
Which cables and chargers work with your USB-C iPhone?
This is where it gets interesting. The USB-C iPhone works in principle with any USB-C cable, but there are some nuances:
- Any USB-C cable will charge it — even the cheapest one from the supermarket. But you may not reach the maximum charging speed.
- For fast charging (27W) you need a USB-C charger of at least 20W. Apple doesn't include one in the box as standard.
- For high data speeds on Pro models you'll need a certified USB 3 cable. A standard USB 2.0 cable works, but it will limit your speed.
- MagSafe and Qi2 work just fine — wireless charging is completely unaffected by the switch.
- Your old Lightning accessories such as speakers or docks won't work directly anymore. Adapters are available, but they're not always reliable.

How fast does a USB-C iPhone charge?
This is the question we hear most often. The short answer: faster than with Lightning, as long as you have the right charger.
With a 20W USB-C adapter, you can charge an iPhone 15 or 16 from 0 to 50% in around 30 minutes. A 30W or 45W adapter is slightly faster still, though the difference above 20W is smaller than manufacturers would have you believe. Still got an old 5W brick lying around? It'll work, but you'll be waiting a few hours.
In our experience, most people underestimate how big the difference is between a slow and a fast USB-C charger. Just last week we helped a customer in Nijverdal who thought her new iPhone 16 was "charging really slowly" — until we noticed she was using an ancient 5W adapter. A new charger sorted it out immediately.
Do you need to throw away all your Lightning accessories?
No, definitely not straight away. A few things to bear in mind:
- Still got an older iPhone? Lightning isn't dead — iPhones up to and including the 14 series still use it.
- AirPods with Lightning still work perfectly. You'll only switch to a USB-C charging case when it's time to replace them.
- Lightning-to-USB-C adapters exist, but always buy from a reputable brand. Cheap alternatives can damage your charging port.
- Trading in or donating old Lightning cables is always an option — many charity shops will take them.
- Accessories like power banks with USB-C are more useful anyway, since they work with multiple devices.
The transition is gradual. You really don't need to throw everything out tomorrow.

Having trouble with your USB-C port?
USB-C is more robust than Lightning, but a USB-C port can still suffer from dust, lint or a hard knock. We see this a few times every week in our workshop: an iPhone that won't charge or won't connect, even though the cable and charger are working fine.
In many cases the charging port is simply blocked with pocket lint. A careful clean is often all it takes. Can I use a USB-C cable from my laptop with my iPhone?
Yes, in most cases. Any USB-C cable will charge a USB-C iPhone. Just keep in mind that for maximum data speeds on Pro models you'll need a USB 3-certified cable. The cable that came with your MacBook or laptop works perfectly fine for everyday charging and file transfers.
Which iPhone was the first to have USB-C?
The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max — all released in September 2023 — were the first iPhones to feature a USB-C connector. All models before them (up to and including the iPhone 14 series) use Lightning.
Does a USB-C iPhone charge faster than a Lightning iPhone?
Yes, but only if you use a suitable fast charger. With a USB-C adapter of at least 20W, a USB-C iPhone charges noticeably faster than a Lightning iPhone on a standard 12W charger. The maximum charging power is 27W for all current USB-C iPhones.
Can I still use my old Lightning AirPods with a USB-C iPhone?
Yes, Bluetooth pairing works just the same — that has nothing to do with the cable connection. The only difference is that you can no longer charge your AirPods case using the same cable as your iPhone. You'll still need a Lightning cable or a wireless charger for that.
What should I do with my old Lightning accessories?
You can continue using them with a Lightning-to-USB-C adapter. Always buy a certified adapter from a reputable brand to avoid damaging your port. Other options include selling, donating or trading them in. For new, universal accessories, take a look at our accessories shop.
