Tips for charging your smartphone
The battery is one of the most important parts of a smartphone.
Naturally you want to keep it in top condition for as long as possible.
Curious about the best way to charge your device? Then read on.
In short: do and do not
What is better to do and better to avoid when it comes to charging your smartphone battery? A quick overview.
Do
Charge your battery briefly several times a day instead of once for a long time.
Use the original charger.
Keep your battery percentage between 50 and 90%.
Do not
Leave it on the charger all night.
Use a charger that is meant for another device.
Charge all the way to 100%.
Myth: fully drain it first, then charge for 12 hours

This dates back to the days before the smartphone. Mobile phones used to have a nickel cadmium battery.
Those batteries have a 'memory'. The longer the battery was charged the first time, the bigger the memory and the longer your battery lasted.
Smartphones have a different type of battery: lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries. These do not have that kind of memory.
You can simply switch the device on and use it straight away without having to charge it for a long time first.
Myth: all night on the charger is bad for your battery

Yes and no. Most chargers and smartphones stop charging by themselves once the battery is 100% full.
But there are also chargers that do not.
Continuing to charge while the battery is full is not good.
It overloads the battery.
Unfortunately, there is no real way to find out whether your charger or smartphone stops charging when the battery is full.
So you simply have to assume that the manufacturer has thought about it.
Aside from that, it is wise not to charge your battery to 100% in the first place.
Myth: short charging is bad for the battery

This is not true.
In fact, it is actually good for your battery.
The lifespan of a modern battery is based on charge cycles.
One cycle is when you have used up 100% of your battery.
It makes no difference whether that happens in one go or, for example, 5 times 20%.
In short, charging your battery from 70 to 80% is no problem at all.
The lifespan stays the same.
Fact: frequent short charging is good for your battery

Regular short charging sessions are better for your battery than 1 long one.
In theory it is best to keep your battery charged between 10 and 90% and to top it up briefly once you have used around 10%.
In practice that is of course almost impossible, but what it comes down to is that your battery keeps its capacity longest if you do not let it run all the way down to 0% and if you charge it briefly and regularly instead of once for a very long time, up to 100%.
Fact: charging to 100% is not good for your battery

Ideally you keep your battery charge below 100%.
If it sits at 100% (for a longer period), a lot of strain is put on the battery.
That in turn generates a lot of heat, and heat and batteries do not go well together.
If you still choose to charge your battery overnight, for example, leaving it at 100% for a long time, then take the device out of its case if it is in one, and make sure it is in a cool place.
Fact: the original charger is always the best charger
The charger that comes with the device as standard is matched to the battery inside your smartphone.
That way it always delivers the right voltage and the right charging speed.
Of course you can use other chargers as well, but in the long run they are less battery friendly than the original charger.
