Why does my phone battery keep draining faster?

3 reasons why your battery drains quickly
Is your battery draining quickly? That usually comes down to a few things.
You have poor reception
If your reception is poor, your phone works extra hard to connect to the network. That takes a lot of energy. And you notice it in your battery. In a room without a good signal, it is smart to switch your phone to airplane mode for a while. Do you have poor reception at home? Then improve your wifi signal, for example by moving your router to a better spot.
Age
Obvious, but it can also be down to age. Nothing lasts forever. That goes for your phone battery too. Frequent charging reduces the battery capacity, and it slowly gets weaker. Even so, you can postpone the ageing with a few smart tips. More on that later.
You just can't put your phone down
Put your phone away now and then. Good for your concentration, your eyes and your battery. Sending WhatsApp messages, listening to a podcast, watching videos, playing games: all of these use energy. And the more often you use it, the quicker it drains and the shorter it stays in top condition. My tip? Put your phone down more often. And don't use it, for example, in the last two hours before you go to sleep. Good for your night's rest!
This is how your battery drains less quickly
Okay. And what if you really can't keep your hands off your phone? If putting it away isn't an option, here are 10 more tips that will make your battery last longer.
Screen brightness
Don't set your phone's screen brightness to maximum. That isn't good for your eyes, especially in the evening. It also costs your phone a lot of extra energy. Lower your screen brightness and you'll see your battery last longer. Pure gain.
Heavy apps
Large apps such as Facebook, Netflix, Skype and MovieMaker are heavy apps. They demand a lot from your battery. Cutting back won't hurt. Good for your battery, and you'll have more time left for the things that are really fun.
Less time on your phone
Put your phone away more often and become aware of how much you use it. Set app limits and stick to them. For Facebook, go for an app limit of no more than fifteen minutes a day, for example. Good for your battery and your productivity.
Switch off unnecessary features
Also handy: switch off GPS and Bluetooth when you're not using them. That way your phone doesn't have to search for new connections all the time. And that saves battery again. Another tip: turn off wifi. Yes, really. When you leave the house and take a walk through the park, you don't need wifi. Still switched on? Then your phone keeps looking for new wifi networks to connect to. And you guessed it: that uses energy too.
Phones do a great many things automatically. So many, that your battery drains faster because of it. That also applies to apps that sync automatically. Your mail app, for instance. It constantly checks whether new mail has come in. Same story for your calendar. The more often you sync, the more battery it costs. Want to change that? I'll help you.
Switching off automatic syncing/refreshing on your iPhone:
- Go to the 'Settings' app.
- Choose 'General'.
- Tap 'Background App Refresh'.
- Now select which apps may and may not refresh in the background.
Switching off automatic syncing/refreshing on your Android phone:
- Go to the settings menu.
- Choose 'Connections'.
- Tap 'Data usage'.
- Go to 'Data saver'.
- Tap 'Allow app while Data saver on'.
- Now select which apps may and may not refresh in the background.
There are even more unnecessary features you can switch off. On iPhones that is Siri, for example. That uses battery as well. You can also switch off automatic push notifications on your phone. Many apps send you push notifications. Such as WhatsApp, Instagram and so on. If you indicate that you don't want to see these notifications on your screen, that saves battery again.
Rein in location sharing
Many apps want to know everything about you. Your location is one example. That can be handy, but it isn't always necessary. A great opportunity to be kind to your battery and switch it off. Turn off location sharing for apps that don't need it.
Switching off location services on the iPhone per app:
- Go to the 'Settings' app.
- Choose an app.
- Tap 'Location',
- Choose 'Never' here, for example.
Are location services switched on by default on your Android phone and do you want to disable them per app? Here's how:
- Go to the settings menu.
- Tap 'Apps'.
- Choose an app.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
- Tap 'Permissions'.
- Make sure the slider next to the app isn't coloured.
Switch on dark mode
Did you know that dark mode on your phone demands less from your battery? Switch on dark mode and every black pixel costs your battery no energy at all. Want to know more about dark screens on your phone? Then read my blog about dark mode. Good for your battery!
