The eternal dilemma
Your iPhone is broken. Cracked screen, worn-out battery, or some other problem. The first question that comes to mind: do I have it repaired or do I buy a new phone? The answer isn't always the same. It depends on a few factors, which we discuss below.
When repairing is the best choice
Your device is less than 3 years old. An iPhone that is two years old still has years of life left in it. A screen repair or a new battery costs a fraction of a new device, and you can enjoy it for years to come.
The problem is specific. A broken screen, a poor battery or a faulty charging port are targeted problems with a targeted solution. That is very different from a device that is having problems on several fronts at once.
You are happy with your current phone. If your iPhone still does everything you need — calling, messaging, taking photos — why spend hundreds of euros on a new device?
When a new or refurbished phone is the smarter move
Your device is older than 4-5 years. Older iPhones eventually stop receiving iOS updates. That means no new features, but more importantly: no more security updates. That is a risk.
Several problems at once. If the screen is broken, the battery is weak, the speaker crackles and the camera no longer focuses, the repair costs add up. In that case, a refurbished device is often the better deal.
The repair costs more than half the price of a refurbished alternative. If a repair costs €200 and you can buy a perfectly good refurbished model for €350, the choice is quickly made.
