Setting up your child's phone safely: where do you start?
As the owner of The Phone Shopper, I see it every day: parents who aren't quite sure where to begin. We come across it all the time in our shop. A busy family, a new device for your son or daughter, and suddenly questions start popping up about privacy, screen time and in-app purchases. Of course you want your child to use their phone safely. That's why I'm sharing this practical guide to keeping your child's phone safe.
Start with a clear conversation
Before you start tweaking settings or blocking apps, talk to your child. Explain why rules exist. Agree on when the phone can be used and what can and can't be shared. In our shop, I always say: clear agreements save a lot of hassle. That conversation is often the most powerful tool against problems.
Basic settings that make an immediate difference
iPhone: Screen Time and privacy
We sell a lot of refurbished iPhones and regularly help customers with these steps. Use the Screen Time feature to set boundaries. You can set app limits, schedule downtime and block explicit content.
- Go to Settings > Screen Time and set a parental passcode.
- Enable Restrictions for purchases and downloads.
- Set communication limits: who can call or message your child.
- Use Content & Privacy Restrictions to block websites or explicit music.
Tip: turn on 'Ask to Buy' when sharing purchases through Family Sharing. We've helped parents who were surprised by unexpected apps or in-app purchases appearing — this prevents exactly that.
Android: parental controls
Although we focus primarily on iPhones, many parents use Android devices. Use Google Family Link or the built-in parental controls to manage apps, screen time and location. The steps are similar to iPhone: limits, content filters and purchase restrictions.
Safety and privacy: practical measures
You can be as strict as you like with time limits, but privacy settings are just as important. Make sure accounts are properly configured and that your child isn't sharing personal details or bios publicly.
- Passwords and access: make sure your child has a strong password and that Face ID or fingerprint unlock is only enabled with your approval.
- Accounts: wherever possible, create child accounts with parental controls enabled.
- Location: turn off location sharing when it isn't necessary.
- Social media: go through the privacy settings of each app together and set accounts to private.
A quick story: recently a mother came into our shop because her daughter was unknowingly sharing her location. A few settings later, the problem was solved. These are exactly the kinds of things we sort out on the spot in our Nijverdal shop.
Practical rules and habits
- No phones at the dinner table or during homework. Make it a household rule.
- Charge devices together in the living room. This lets you keep an eye on usage and prevents late-night scrolling.
- Teach your child what makes a safe photo or message. Show them examples.
- Hold regular check-ins: ask what they're up to and which apps they're using.
These habits are just as valuable as any technical setting. And trust me: parents who stay consistent have far fewer headaches.
What to do when something goes wrong
Has something gone wrong? An unfamiliar app, an upsetting message or a cracked screen? Come and see us. We see it regularly: children who accidentally make expensive purchases, or phones with a crack that starts causing other issues. At The Phone Shopper we're here to help with advice, repairs and even trade-ins of old devices. You'll find us at Willem Alexanderstraat 11 in Nijverdal, or give us a call on 0548-549536.
Delete and reset when necessary
Sometimes removing an app or doing a factory reset is the right call. Do it together with your child and explain why. Always back up important photos and contacts before you reset.
Extra tip: smart apps that can help
There are plenty of tools and apps that make parental controls easier to manage. We recommend apps that give you a clear overview without being overly restrictive. A few favourites we often suggest:
- Google Family Link (Android)
- Apple Screen Time (iPhone)
- App timers and content filters from reputable providers
In the shop, we often call these the "first aid kit" for busy parents. They bring peace of mind and help shape behaviour without damaging the relationship.
Finally: balance is the goal
You want your child to learn how to navigate technology responsibly. That means setting boundaries and building trust. Make clear rules, configure the right settings and keep the lines of communication open. If you'd like some help, we're happy to do it together. Pop into our shop in Nijverdal at Willem Alexanderstraat 11, or give us a ring to book an appointment: 0548-549536. At The Phone Shopper, we'll help you get everything set up straight away — from configuration and guidance to repairs. That way, your child's phone stays safe and you get peace of mind too.
