Why great photos with your phone are absolutely possible
Your phone is always in your pocket. That makes it the perfect tool for capturing memories. We see it in our shop all the time: people think great photos are only possible with expensive cameras. Not true. With a few smart phone photography tips, you'll notice the difference straight away. Here's what I teach customers at our shop on Willem Alexanderstraat 11.
Start with the right tools
A good lens, a clean screen and a steady grip are often all you need. Don't use a worn-out case that creeps over the lens. Always give the lens a quick wipe — yes, those greasy fingerprints count too. At our shop in Nijverdal, we're happy to give your device a quick clean and show you the best way to hold it.
Phone photography tips: basic settings
A few quick wins that almost everyone skips:
- Turn on the grid (rule of thirds). It makes framing your shots so much easier.
- Tap to focus and hold to lock the exposure. This prevents blown-out skies or dark faces.
- Use HDR in high-contrast situations. It combines multiple exposures for better detail in both shadows and highlights.
- Switch to the highest resolution if you plan to crop or print later.
Try these tips and you'll see a difference immediately. We often say in the shop: "small adjustments, big impact."
Composition and perspective
Composition makes or breaks a photo. You can spend hours tweaking filters, but good composition always comes first.
Play with lines and layers
Look for leading lines: roads, fences, shadows. Use them to draw the viewer towards your subject. Don't always place your subject dead centre — leave some space in the direction they're looking. In the shop, we often encourage customers to try different angles. Sometimes crouching low works better. Other times, shooting from above is the way to go.
Foreground and background
A cluttered background can ruin an otherwise great photo. A simple trick: take a step left or right. That alone often clears up the background. Or use portrait mode for a subtle blurred background effect. We always advise which distance works best for which device.
Light is your best friend
Light creates emotion and depth. Bad light isn't an excuse — it's a challenge.
Soft light works best
Avoid harsh midday light coming straight from above. Find some shade, or shoot early in the morning and late in the evening. That warm, soft light — golden hour — does wonders. Indoors, a window can act as a natural softbox. We often hear customers say: "but I don't need a filter" — and most of the time, they're absolutely right.
Use reflections and backlighting
Mirrors, wet streets and windows add extra dimension to your shots. Backlighting can look magical when you nail the exposure. Tap your subject on screen to let your phone meter the light, and manually adjust if needed.
Sharpness and stability
A blurry photo is a wasted photo. Stability is simple but crucial.
- Breathe out slowly and keep your elbows close to your body.
- Use a tripod or a steady surface for longer shutter speeds.
- Try the self-timer or a Bluetooth remote to avoid camera shake when pressing the shutter.
We often see customers in the shop amazed by how much difference it makes when they simply stand still. A steady hand frequently delivers professional-looking results straight away.
Editing: less is often more
Edit your photos with intention. A few small adjustments can bring out the best in your image.
- Crop and straighten for better composition.
- Adjust exposure and contrast subtly.
- Sharpen your photo slightly, but don't overdo it.
- Use presets or filters as a starting point, but tweak them for each photo individually.
There are free apps and paid tools available. In the shop, we often recommend which apps work well with the refurbished iPhones we sell.
Practical tricks we recommend all the time
A few handy tips that customers love:
- Use your headphone volume button as a shutter release for extra stability.
- Taking a group photo? Put all phones on aeroplane mode and shoot a burst to pick the best frame.
- Shoot in RAW if you edit a lot. You'll have more detail and more flexibility.
We demonstrate these regularly to people who come in to The Phone Shopper. Sometimes it's simply a matter of being willing to give it a go.
Practise and experiment
The best way to learn photography is by doing it. Set yourself small challenges: one subject, five different angles. Or spend a day capturing only close-up details. In our shop, we regularly see customers taking noticeably better photos after just fifteen minutes of practice. It's something you really have to experience for yourself.
