Why a little preparation goes a long way
As a retailer, I see it all the time: someone buys a great device and thinks "I'll sort that out later." And later, it turns out that important things are missing after all. Photos, WhatsApp conversations, contacts. That's why transferring your phone data isn't something to squeeze in between other things. A few simple steps are all it takes to avoid the stress. In our shop in Nijverdal, we help customers with exactly these kinds of transfers every day.
Preparation: what you'll need
Before you start, make sure you have the following to hand:
- Your old and new phone
- A charger for both devices (or a cable if you're transferring via cable)
- Your iCloud or Google account passwords
- Enough storage space, or a computer for a backup
- Time: allow between 20 minutes and an hour, depending on how much data you have
Simple enough, but you don't want to discover halfway through that you can't remember your password. We often help customers who've lost theirs; fortunately it's usually resolved quickly, but it does take time.
Step 1: Always make a backup
This is the most important step. A backup is your safety net. For iPhone, use iCloud or a backup via your computer (Finder/iTunes). For Android, you can use Google backups or make a local copy.
iPhone
Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup and tap "Back Up Now". Wait until the process is complete.
Android
Settings > Google > Backup. You can also use manufacturer-specific apps (Samsung Smart Switch, for example, has a built-in backup and restore function).
Step 2: Transfer wirelessly or via cable
There are two main methods: wireless (cloud) and via cable. Both work well. Wireless is convenient, but can slow down with large amounts of data. Cables are often faster and more reliable.
- Wireless (cloud): sign in to your new device with the same account and choose to restore from backup.
- Cable: connect the two devices directly or via your computer and choose to restore. iPhones can transfer via Quick Start using either a cable or Wi-Fi.
In the shop, we often use a cable for large transfers. Less hassle, faster results.
Step 3: WhatsApp, photos, and apps
WhatsApp has its own process for transferring chats. Create a backup in WhatsApp on your old device (iCloud or Google Drive), install WhatsApp on your new phone, and restore it during the setup process.
Photos: these are often the heaviest part. Check that Photos (iCloud Photos or Google Photos) is enabled. If you have a large photo library, syncing everything over Wi-Fi can take hours. Consider making a local backup on your computer.
Apps: most apps will simply be re-downloaded. Pay attention to your login credentials: two-factor authentication apps and some banking apps require extra steps.
Step 4: SIM card and contacts
Contacts are usually stored in your account (iCloud or Google). However, some people have contacts saved on their SIM card. Remove the SIM card and check that everything is in order. Feel free to contact us if you need help; we'll go through it together at The Phone Shopper.
Tip
Take a screenshot of any important settings before you make the switch. Those screenshots can be worth their weight in gold.
Step 5: Sign out and reset your old device
Once everything has been transferred and you've confirmed that your photos, messages, and contacts are all there, sign out of iCloud/Google and restore the device to factory settings. This prevents issues when selling or trading it in.
We regularly see people who haven't fully signed out of their account. This makes the device unusable for the new owner, so make sure you do this properly.
Common problems and solutions
- Transfer stops halfway: check your battery and Wi-Fi connection. Sometimes using a cable or restarting the devices helps.
- Forgotten password: use account recovery via your email address or phone number. Alternatively, pop in and see us — we'll walk you through it step by step.
- WhatsApp chats are missing: check that you're using the same phone number and account for the restore.
- Apps are asking you to log in again: annoying, but perfectly normal. Note down important login credentials or use a password manager.
