You open your iPhone's settings, scroll to "Battery Health" and see: 85%. Good news or bad news? The answer is more nuanced than you'd think, and depends on a lot more than that one number. A phone's battery health is really a story of percentages, usage patterns and daily habits. Once you understand it, you make smarter decisions about repairing, buying or waiting.
In short: a battery health of 85% is still perfectly usable for most people, but if you experience fast draining, unexpected shutdowns or charging problems, a battery replacement is often the smartest and cheapest solution.
What does battery health actually mean?
Every lithium-ion battery has a maximum capacity, expressed in mAh. Over time, through charge cycles and use, that capacity decreases. Battery health is the ratio between the current maximum capacity and the original capacity. An iPhone with 100% battery health is as good as new. At 85% it can only store 85% of the original amount of energy.
That may sound dramatic, but it doesn't have to be. We see it every day in our workshop in Nijverdal: many people come in with a device at 83% or 84% and hardly have any complaints. And the other way round, we sometimes see phones with 89% battery health where the battery still doesn't behave reliably, because a cell is damaged internally.
When is 85% battery health still perfectly fine?
85% is fine if you:
- use your phone moderately: calls, messaging, browsing and some social media
- still have 20 to 30% battery left at the end of the day
- don't rely on GPS navigation, video recording or heavy apps all day
- aren't out and about a lot without a way to charge
- don't suffer from unexpected shutdowns or spikes in battery usage
Apple itself states that the iPhone "performs optimally" down to 80% battery health. That means 85% is well above Apple's own threshold. In our experience most people only really start noticing problems below 79 to 80%.
Light users can still get through half a day fine at 78%. So it's not just about the percentage: it's about your usage and how the battery behaves.
When is 85% actually a problem?
There are situations where 85% is not enough. Watch for these signals:
- Unexpected shutdowns: if your phone suddenly dies at 30%, the battery is no longer internally stable.
- Extremely fast draining: from 100% to 20% in two hours without intensive use is an alarm bell.
- Charging times doubled: this sometimes points to a damaged cell that no longer absorbs energy properly.
- Performance management active: on iPhones you'll see in the settings that iOS is slowing the processor to prevent shutdowns.
- The phone gets warm during normal use: heat is a sign of a cell working harder than it should.
Recognise one or more of these symptoms? Then 85% is just a number on paper. Reality tells a different story. Have your battery checked by our technicians: it costs you nothing and we look at it straight away.
How fast does battery health decline?
An average iPhone battery loses about 5 to 10% health per year with normal use. That depends on:
- Charging habits: charging from 0% to 100% every night accelerates wear. Keeping it between 20% and 80% is much better for its lifespan.
- Temperature: heat is the biggest enemy of a lithium-ion battery. Never leave your phone in a hot car.
- Fast charging: handy, but don't use it every time. Slow charging spares the battery.
- Charge cycles: Apple designs the iPhone battery for about 500 full charge cycles before significant loss occurs.
To illustrate: someone who charges their phone twice a day uses twice as many cycles as someone who charges once. After two years the difference in battery health can add up to 15 to 20 percentage points.
Battery health on refurbished phones: what should you expect?
This is a question we hear at The Phone Shopper every week: "Is a second-hand iPhone with 85% battery still worth it?" The honest answer: yes, provided this is communicated honestly and the phone has been properly tested.
Every refurbished device we sell has a minimum battery health of 85%. Is it below that? Then we replace the battery before sale. No exceptions. That way you know for sure you're buying a device that actually lasts a full day.

What does a battery replacement cost at The Phone Shopper?
Last week a lady came to our counter in Nijverdal. Her iPhone 13 still looked beautiful, but the battery had shrunk to 77%. She wondered whether she needed a new phone. We told her honestly: no. A battery replacement for her model costs around €69.00 with us and was done within an hour, while she had a coffee in town.
That's the advantage of an in-house workshop with certified technicians. No week-long waits, no shipping to a service centre. Just walk in at Willem Alexanderstraat 11 in Nijverdal and in most cases you're . From abroad you can also send your device in.
Got a Samsung? That works too. Our technicians work on of various generations. And if you're completely done with it, you can sell your old device to us for immediate payment.
How do you check your phone's battery health?
On an iPhone, do this:
- Open Settings
- Tap Battery
- Tap Battery Health & Charging
- At the top you see the percentage: this is your phone's battery health
- Is there also a message about performance management? Then action is advisable
On a Samsung Galaxy device it works slightly differently. Go to Settings → Device care → Battery. Some Samsung models show a battery status here. Want an accurate measurement? Our technicians read out battery health with professional diagnostic software, more precise than what the device itself shows.
Unsure about the state of your battery? Feel free to drop in. We'll check it for free, no obligations.
Frequently asked questions
From what percentage should my phone battery be replaced?
As a rule of thumb: below 80% it's wise to consider a replacement. But the percentage isn't everything. If at 82% you already suffer unexpected shutdowns or extremely fast draining, acting earlier is better. Our technicians look beyond the percentage and assess overall battery health with professional measuring equipment.
Is a refurbished iPhone with 85% battery health a good buy?
Yes, absolutely, provided the seller is transparent about the state of the battery and has tested the device properly. At The Phone Shopper a minimum of 85% applies to every refurbished device we sell. If battery health is below that, we replace the battery before sale. On top of that you get a two-year warranty.
How long does an iPhone battery last?
On average an iPhone battery lasts two to three years with normal use before health noticeably declines. Apple designs the battery for around 500 full charge cycles down to 80% remaining capacity. If you charge smartly, staying between 20% and 80%, you extend its lifespan considerably.
Can I improve my phone's battery health myself?
Stopping fast charging as a daily habit helps. Also turn on optimised charging (on iPhones): it learns when you wake up in the morning and keeps the battery at 80% longer to cause less wear. What you can't do: regain lost capacity. Once it has declined, you can't turn back the clock, only replace.
What's the difference between battery health and battery capacity?
Battery capacity is the absolute amount of energy the battery can store, expressed in mAh (milliampere-hours). Battery health is the relative value: what percentage of the original capacity is left? An iPhone 15 has an original capacity of about 3,349 mAh. At 85% battery health that's still around 2,847 mAh. Together the two numbers tell the whole story.
