A scratch on your screen happens in seconds. We see it regularly in the shop: customers with a lovely device that picked up scars from one small drop. Which type of screen protector should you choose?
There are three commonly used options. Each has its own advantages.
- Tempered glass - feels solid and smooth. The best protection against scratches and knocks. Good for touch response and clarity. We often recommend this for iPhones.
- PET film - thin and cheap. Protects against scratches, but not against heavy impacts. Stays very flat and is almost invisible.
- TPU / liquid film - flexible and self-healing on small scratches. Works well with rounded edges, though applying it is a bit trickier.
- Privacy film - ideal if you would rather not have everyone reading your screen on the train or bus. Bear in mind that brightness drops a little.
- Matte film - reduces reflections and greasy marks. Handy if you are outdoors a lot or bothered by glare.

Preparation before applying a screen protector
Good preparation is half the job. I always fit them in a calm, dust-free environment. In the shop we have special kits, but you can already do a lot at home. Here is what you need:
- Alcohol wipe or cleaning cloth
- Microfibre cloth
- Dust sticker or sticky tape
- A positioning frame if one is supplied
- Steady hands and patience
Important: ideally do it in the bathroom after a shower. The steam means fewer dust particles floating in the air.
Step by step: applying a screen protector
Here is my practical method. Work through the steps calmly and you will get a neat result with no air bubbles.
Step 1 - Clean
Use the alcohol wipe to clean the screen thoroughly. Then wipe with a dry microfibre cloth until the glass is completely dry and free of greasy marks. Use the dust sticker to lift off any remaining dust particles. We see it happen often: one tiny speck under the film ruins the result. Really do take your time here.
Step 2 - Position
Hold the screen protector above the screen without lowering it. Check that the camera and sensors line up neatly. Some kits include a frame that clips around the phone so the protector sits perfectly. If one is included, use the frame. Otherwise you can carefully fix one side down and lower it from there.
Step 3 - Apply
Let the protector down slowly and press gently in the middle. The adhesive bonds by itself. With glass it usually settles nicely and air bubbles move out to the edges. With film you can push bubbles towards the edge using a plastic card wrapped in microfibre.
Step 4 - Bubbles and finishing
Small air bubbles often disappear within 24 hours. Is there a speck of dust causing a bump? Use a piece of tape to lift the protector slightly at the edge and remove the speck with a dust sticker. Common mistakes
A few mistakes I see often, and how to avoid them:
- Working too fast. Take your time when applying the screen protector.
- Not choosing a dust-free moment. Do it in the bathroom after a shower.
- Not checking compatibility with cases. Some glass protectors cover the edges poorly in combination with tight cases.
- Touching the adhesive layer directly. Hold the protector by the edges or use the protective tab.

Extra tips for lasting protection
A good protector on its own is not always enough. Invest in a sturdy case and remove your protector as soon as it is damaged. Damaged protective layers absorb less energy in a fall, and they do not look great either. Also keep your screen clean with a microfibre cloth to limit fingerprints and grime.
