What is NFC on your phone?
NFC stands for Near Field Communication. In short: a simple way for your phone to wirelessly exchange small bits of information with another device or tag. We see it regularly in our shop: customers have it switched on but don't quite know what they can use it for. Time to set that straight.
How exactly does it work?
An NFC phone has a tiny antenna inside. Hold your phone close to another NFC device or an NFC tag and they communicate. No wifi, no Bluetooth pairing, just direct contact at short range. That makes it safe and fast. In practice it often works just as simply as holding your bank card against a payment terminal.
Practical uses
You can use NFC on your phone for all sorts of everyday things. Below are the most common uses we hear about in the shop or use ourselves.
- Contactless payments – The best known: Apple Pay or Google Pay. You hold your NFC phone against the payment terminal and you're done. No bank card needed.
- Public transport and access cards – Travelling or entering buildings without a physical pass; some systems work with NFC.
- Sharing data – Transferring photos, links or small files by briefly holding two phones together (not equally user-friendly on every phone).
- Smart tags – Small stickers or tags you place around the house. You can program them to, for example, switch on wifi, turn off your alarm or start a routine.
- Pairing with accessories – Some speakers or headphones pair via NFC when you briefly hold them together.
A few real-life examples
In our shop in Nijverdal people often ask: "Is it safe?" My answer: yes, as long as you're sensible with your phone lock and banking apps. One of our customers used NFC tags to switch off his smart lighting when he came home. Another used a tag by the front door that instantly shares the wifi login with guests (handy during parties).
I use my own NFC phone daily to quickly send music to a speaker and to pay. It saves hassle with cables and passwords. Small effort, great convenience.
Security and privacy
Security is often a concern. Understandably. But NFC works at very short range (a few centimetres). And important functions like payments usually immediately require your fingerprint, Face ID or PIN. Still, a few tips:
- Secure payment apps properly with biometrics or a PIN.
- Switch NFC off when you're not using it, if that gives you peace of mind.
- Be careful with unknown NFC tags: don't just tap links that tags open.
Which phones support NFC?
Virtually all modern smartphones have NFC. Both iPhones and Android phones. On iPhones you can read NFC tags and use Apple Pay from certain models onwards. On Android it varies by brand, but most mid-range and high-end models support it as standard.
