iPhone storage full? Here is how to fix it fast
We see it regularly in our shop: someone walks in with an iPhone and the "iPhone storage full" alert keeps coming back. Annoying. Especially when you are about to take a photo or install an update. I will give you practical tips that I and my colleagues at The Phone Shopper often recommend. No complicated IT jargon, just do it and breathe again.
Step 1 — First see what is eating up the space
Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage. There you will see a chart showing what uses how much space: photos, apps, system, etc. The culprit is often right there. Take a screenshot or remember the largest category. In our shop in Nijverdal, people often get stuck on large apps or hundreds of photos.
Step 2 — Clean up photos and videos (quick wins)
Photos are the biggest space hog for most people. And yes, we take a lot of them. What works:
- Delete duplicate and blurry photos. There are apps that do this quickly for you, or you can do it manually.
- Check the Recently Deleted folder and empty it. Hundreds of photos are often sitting there waiting to be permanently removed.
- Turn on Optimise iPhone Storage via Settings > Photos if you use iCloud. Your iPhone then keeps smaller versions locally and the full-res copies in iCloud.
- Want to really win back space? Move your largest videos to a computer or external drive, or upload them to a cloud service.
Step 3 — Clean up and offload apps
Apps can store a lot of data. Games, social media and streaming apps are frequently the culprits.
- Delete apps you rarely use. You can always download them again.
- Use the Offload unused apps feature. The app disappears, but your data is kept. Handy if you reinstall the app later.
- Some apps let you clear the cache within the app itself (Instagram or Spotify, for example). Otherwise: delete the app and reinstall it to wipe the cache.
Step 4 — Clean up Messages and WhatsApp
Messaging quickly takes up space. Large attachments such as videos and voice messages pile up.
- Go to Settings > Messages and set messages to delete automatically after 30 days or 1 year.
- In WhatsApp you can see per conversation how much storage it uses and delete specific media. That often makes a big difference.
Step 5 — Music, podcasts and downloads
Offline music and podcasts are handy, but they take up space. Use streaming where possible. Delete downloads you no longer need. Also check Apple Music and Podcasts to see which items are stored offline and remove them selectively.
Step 6 — Clear your browser and cache
Safari and other browsers store cache and cookies. This is easy to clear: Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. Yes, you may have to log in to sites again, but you win back space.
Step 7 — Use backups and iCloud wisely
If you use iCloud, there may be an old iPhone backup taking up a lot of space. Go to Settings > your name > iCloud > Manage Storage to see which backups exist. Delete old or unnecessary backups. Tip: check which apps are included in your iCloud backup and switch off large apps you do not need to back up.
Step 8 — Find large files (and delete them)
In iPhone Storage, some apps show a list of large files. Tackle those. They are usually downloaded films, PDFs or offline maps. Get rid of them if you do not use them.
What we often recommend at The Phone Shopper
In our shop in Nijverdal (Willem Alexanderstraat 11) we often hear what people struggle with. A few practical tips that work well here:
- Trade-in for more storage: Sometimes your device is simply too small. We stock refurbished iPhones with larger storage. Trading in is also possible. Drop by or call 0548-549536.
- Help with backups and migration: We are happy to help you safely transfer photos and data to a new iPhone or external storage.
- Repair and maintenance: Is your device slow or is something not working properly? Sometimes a small repair or reset does the trick.
Sometimes it is easier: a new or refurbished iPhone
You can keep tidying up. But at some point it is more practical to get a device with more storage. At The Phone Shopper we have a selection of refurbished iPhones with different storage sizes.
