iPhone camera repair: when is it worth it?

For many people, the camera is the most important reason to buy an iPhone. Photos of your kids, holiday snaps, that beautiful sunset — you want them to be sharp. But what if your camera no longer works properly?
Common camera problems
In our workshop in Nijverdal, we regularly see these complaints:
- Photos are blurry or out of focus, especially with the rear camera
- The camera no longer focuses or keeps hunting back and forth
- The camera glass on the back is cracked
- The camera app shows a black screen
- The front camera (selfie cam) doesn't work or shows strange colours
- The flashlight flickers or has stopped working
Cracked camera glass: easier to fix than you think
Cracked camera glass is one of the most common problems, especially on the iPhone 12 and newer models, where the camera lens sticks out considerably. The good news: the glass can be replaced separately, without having to swap out the entire camera module. That makes a big difference in cost.
Don't wait too long, though. A crack in the glass lets dust and moisture reach the lens, which makes the image quality worse and worse over time.
Replacing the camera module
If the problem runs deeper — the autofocus no longer works, the image stabilisation stutters, or you get a black screen — the camera module itself needs to be replaced. This is a more involved repair, but certainly doable.
When is a repair worth it?
Our rule of thumb: if your device otherwise works fine and is less than three or four years old, a is almost always cheaper than buying a new phone. You pay a fraction of the new price and get a perfectly working camera again.
