iPhone 16 vs iPhone 14: Is Upgrading Worth It?
Two generations of chip, USB-C versus Lightning and a completely different design — we put the refurbished iPhone 16 and iPhone 14 side by side so you can decide whether upgrading is truly worth it.

The iPhone 14 has become one of the most popular entry-level models in refurbished form, while the iPhone 16 represents two full generations of progress. If you're weighing up a sharp price against future-proofing, we've broken down the key differences — no marketing spin included.
Chip: A18 versus A16, two generations apart
The iPhone 14 runs on the A15 Bionic (the same chip found in the iPhone 13 Pro), while the iPhone 16 comes equipped with the A18. That's no small step: the A18 is faster, more efficient and — crucially — future-proof, packing the processing power needed for Apple Intelligence features that simply don't run on the iPhone 14. In everyday use — opening apps, browsing, editing photos — you'll mainly notice the difference during demanding tasks and over the longer term.
Dynamic Island versus the notch
One of the most visible differences: the iPhone 14 still has the classic notch at the top of the screen, whereas the iPhone 16 features the Dynamic Island — the interactive pill that displays notifications, timers and Live Activities. Purely cosmetically, this won't be a dealbreaker for every user, but once you've used the Dynamic Island, it's hard to go back.
USB-C versus Lightning: the difference that really matters
This is arguably the most practical difference of all. The iPhone 14 still uses a Lightning connector, while the iPhone 16 charges via USB-C — the same standard as your MacBook, iPad and most Android devices. One cable for everything, faster data transfer and you're ready for the future, since Lightning accessories are becoming increasingly hard to find.
Action Button and Camera Control
The iPhone 16 introduces the Action Button (absent on the 14) and adds a Camera Control button: a dedicated key for shutter speed, zoom and launching the camera instantly. Great if you take a lot of photos or want to programme the side button to a custom shortcut.
Camera and battery
Both devices have a capable dual-camera system, but the iPhone 16 goes further with an improved sensor, better low-light performance and sharper video stabilisation. Battery life also goes to the iPhone 16: thanks to its more efficient chip, you get more screen time out of a single charge — something you'll notice even more as a battery accumulates wear over the years.
Software updates: the long game
Because the iPhone 16 is newer, it will simply receive iOS updates for significantly longer than the iPhone 14. If you're buying a phone to last five years, that carries more weight than the purchase price alone.

Refurbished pricing
The iPhone 14 has dropped considerably in price and is now one of the most competitively priced refurbished devices in our range — an excellent deal if you want a reliable iPhone without paying for the latest bells and whistles. The iPhone 16 naturally requires a higher investment, but in return you get years of additional longevity and the latest standards. For current prices, check the individual product pages.
Which one should you choose?
Looking for the best value for money and mainly use your phone for calls, messaging and social media? Then the iPhone 14 is a great, affordable choice. Want a device that lasts longer, has USB-C and is ready for years of software updates to come? Then the iPhone 16 is the smarter investment. There's no wrong answer — just the choice that fits your budget and how you use your phone.
