iPhone 14 vs iPhone 12: Is the Upgrade Worth It?
We put the iPhone 14 and iPhone 12 side by side on chip, camera, battery and software support — and give you an honest recommendation on which refurbished choice makes the most sense.

The chip: A15 vs A14 — barely noticeable in daily use
The iPhone 14 runs on the A15 Bionic, while the iPhone 12 uses the A14 Bionic. On paper that's one generation apart, but in practice you'll hardly notice. Both chips handle messaging, browsing, social media and even the latest iOS versions with ease. If you're expecting a noticeably faster phone, you'll be disappointed — the real difference lies in long-term durability, not in day-to-day performance right now.
Display and design: nearly identical
Both phones feature a 6.1-inch OLED display with the classic notch — no Dynamic Island here. Size and weight are also very similar. One thing worth noting: both models still charge via Lightning, not USB-C — Apple didn't make that switch until the iPhone 15. So if you're looking to ditch the Lightning cable today, neither of these is your answer.
Camera: this is where the iPhone 14 pulls ahead
The biggest difference between these two is the camera. The iPhone 14 features an upgraded main lens with a larger sensor and improved low-light performance, combined with the Photonic Engine for sharper details and more natural colours in dim conditions. Action Mode is also new: heavily stabilised video that's ideal when you're on the move or filming kids. If you take a lot of photos and videos, this is where you'll notice the difference most quickly and most clearly.
Battery and safety
The iPhone 14 lasts noticeably longer on a full charge, thanks to a more efficient chip and improved battery management. It also introduces Crash Detection: if you're involved in a serious collision and can't call for help yourself, the phone will automatically contact the emergency services. It's a feature you'll hopefully never need — but one that offers a reassuring extra layer of safety.
Software updates: longer lifespan
Because the iPhone 14 is a generation newer, it will continue to receive iOS updates for longer. If you like to hold onto your phone for as long as possible, that's a meaningful advantage over time.

Refurbished pricing
Our refurbished iPhone 12 is keenly priced — making it one of the smartest entry-level choices if you want a reliable iPhone without paying a premium for the latest camera features. Every device goes through our 50-point inspection and comes with a standard 2-year warranty, whichever model you choose.
Which one should you go for?
Honestly, the gap between these two is smaller than the model names might suggest. If you just want a dependable phone at a fair price and you're not snapping hundreds of photos every week, the iPhone 12 is often the smarter buy. But if a better camera, longer battery life and more future software support matter to you — and you want to hold onto your phone a little longer — then stepping up to the iPhone 14 is well worth considering.
