HELP, my phone is soaking wet!
You get up from the toilet and hear a splash, you put your favourite trousers in the wash,
you are walking in the rain and a lorry drives past, you are on the phone outside and
the neighbours' boy throws a water balloon, your partner decides you really should do that ice
bucket challenge one more time, or you run straight into the sea for the New Year's dive without thinking.
They all have one thing in common: your phone is now soaking wet!
The fake solution
Many people put their smartphone, iPhone, iPad or MacBook in a bowl of rice,
place it on the radiator and expect the rice to draw the moisture out of the device,
repairing the water damage. In reality, this only makes things worse.
The rice can leave stains on your device, and the heat makes the rice, but also internal components, expand,
which pushes the water to places where it was not before.
As soon as you let moisture dry up instead of removing it, corrosion forms on the internal components.
Corrosion attacks those components (slowly) and causes faults or even a total failure.
That is why it is so important that dried-up moisture and early corrosion are removed, to prevent the
slow death of your device.
The solution that saves your phone
Switch the phone off immediately.
Electricity combined with water makes corrosion form faster.
This is the most damaging thing for your phone, because it increases the risk of a short circuit and overheating.
For that reason, do not charge your phone in the days that follow either.
Remove the battery and the SIM card.
If possible, take the battery out of your iPhone, iPad or MacBook as quickly as you can.
That way you prevent electricity from running through the device.
To avoid damage to the chip of the SIM card, it is wise to remove that from your device as well.
Shake the water out of your phone.
If you can, shake the excess water out of your iPhone, iPad or MacBook. That way you remove moisture from the openings.
Then dry the phone with a towel or another absorbent material or cloth.
Do NOT heat your phone.
Do not put your phone on the radiator, in the sun, in the oven or under a hairdryer.
This only makes the damage to your device worse. The heat makes internal components expand,
which pushes the water to places where it was not before.
So all you do is make the damage bigger.
Contact your phone repair specialist.
Call your phone repair specialist as soon as possible and ask for a water damage treatment.
This treatment (when carried out professionally) prevents corrosion and removes any first signs of corrosion.
The sooner you have this treatment done, the higher the chance of saving your best friend (read: your device).
Why really no rice?
Unfortunately, we still see it far too often: customers walking in with a device that has been sitting in rice. And yes, rice absorbs moisture. The
problem, however, is that rice leaves stains and that small grains or bits of rice settle inside the device (marked with red circles), causing
more damage than if you had followed the steps above. The moment you think the rice has drawn out the moisture, the truth is that the
(dried-up) moisture (marked with blue circles) has turned into deposits that start to corrode. Your device may seem to work again for a while, but
the corrosion slowly attacks the components inside. Chances are that in the long run your device will start showing faults or even break
down completely.
