Two SIM cards, one phone — sounds simple, but a lot of people aren't quite sure how a dual SIM phone works or which model is right for them. That said, interest in them has grown significantly over the past few years. And we get it: who wants to carry two phones in their pocket?
Quick summary: A dual SIM phone has two SIM card slots (or one physical slot plus one eSIM), letting you keep two numbers active on a single device. Perfect for separating work and personal life, or for using a local number when travelling abroad.
What exactly is a dual SIM phone?
A dual SIM phone lets you use two SIM cards at the same time. That sounds straightforward, but there are real differences between the variants available on the market. The three most common types:
- Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS): Both SIM cards are on standby simultaneously, but you can only make a call on one at a time. This is the most common variant.
- Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA): Both SIM cards are truly active at the same time. You won't miss a call on your second number while you're already on a call with the first. Rarer and more expensive.
- Nano-SIM + eSIM: One physical SIM card and one digital eSIM. This is the direction Apple and a growing number of Android manufacturers are heading. Flexible, but you'll need a carrier that supports eSIM.

Dual SIM or two separate phones?
Honestly, for some people two separate devices makes more sense. We'll say it straight, even if we'd rather sell one great phone. If your employer requires your work phone to be fully managed — MDM software, strict security policies — you really don't want to mix that with your personal device. In that case, a affordable refurbished phone as a second device might be the smarter choice.
But for most people, one dual SIM phone is simpler, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly than carrying two separate devices.
How do you set up a dual SIM phone?
Most modern devices handle the bulk of this automatically, but here's a quick step-by-step if you want to get it set up yourself:
- Insert the SIM cards: Place the SIM cards in the correct slots (watch the nano-SIM versus micro-SIM format). For an eSIM, your carrier will provide a QR code that you scan with your phone.
- Label each SIM: Give each SIM a recognisable name, such as "Work" and "Personal." This makes calling and texting much easier to manage.
- Set your default SIM: Choose which SIM is used by default for calls, texts, and data. You can also configure this separately for individual apps.
- Assign mobile data: Choose which SIM handles your mobile data. You can only use one at a time (unless your device supports DSDA).
- Check visual voicemail: Some carriers don't support this on a second SIM. It's worth confirming with your provider.

Dual SIM and battery life: what you need to know
One misconception we come across regularly: "If I use two SIM cards, won't my battery drain much faster?" It's not as bad as people think, but there's a grain of truth to it. A dual SIM phone is constantly searching for a signal on two networks. If one of those SIMs has poor reception, the radio works harder — and that uses more power.
A practical tip: if you rarely use the second SIM, temporarily disable it in your settings. That way you keep the flexibility without unnecessarily draining the battery. Frequently asked questions
Can I add a second SIM card to my current iPhone?
It depends on the model. From the iPhone XS (2018) onwards, Apple supports a combination of one nano-SIM and one eSIM. iPhones purchased in the US and released from the iPhone 15 onwards only support dual eSIM — meaning there's no physical SIM card slot. Always check the model specifications or ask us. We'll look it up for you free of charge in our Nijverdal shop.
Does a dual SIM phone work with any Dutch carrier?
Almost all Dutch carriers support dual SIM phones. For eSIM, however, you'll need a carrier that offers it — such as KPN, T-Mobile, Vodafone, Odido, or Simyo. Prepaid SIMs don't always support eSIM. Check with your provider before making the switch.
Can I use mobile data on both SIM cards at the same time?
On most dual SIM phones, you can only use mobile data on one SIM at a time. You choose which one that is in your settings. The other SIM remains reachable for calls and texts. Only devices with Dual SIM Dual Active (DSDA) can theoretically use both data connections simultaneously, but this is rare in consumer handsets.
Is a dual SIM phone more expensive than a regular phone?
Barely. Most mid-range and high-end devices support dual SIM as standard, with no price premium. With budget models, it's sometimes worth double-checking: some have a hybrid slot where the second SIM slot doubles as a microSD card slot — meaning you have to choose between extra storage and a second SIM.
Can I use a dual SIM phone with two contracts from the same carrier?
Absolutely. Many people do exactly this to combine a work and personal plan from the same carrier, or to pair a generous data plan alongside their regular contract. The phone treats the two SIM cards as completely separate connections.
