Dark mode on your phone: better for your eyes and battery?
Dark mode only saves noticeable battery life on OLED screens, and its effect on your eyes depends entirely on your situation. Here's the full story, with tips straight from our workshop.

Nearly every phone has it these days: dark mode. Dark backgrounds, white text, and that feeling that your screen is finally easier on the eyes at night. But does dark mode on your phone actually benefit your eyes, and does it genuinely save battery life? The answer is more nuanced than most tech blogs would have you believe.
Quick summary: Dark mode only saves noticeable battery life on devices with an OLED or AMOLED screen. For your eyes, it's easier in the dark, but a white screen actually performs better in daylight. It's situational — not unconditionally better in every case.
What exactly is dark mode?
Dark mode is a display setting that switches your phone's interface — apps, menus, system screens — to dark colours. Think a black or dark grey background with light text, rather than the familiar white screen with black lettering.
You'll find the setting on virtually every modern device. On an iPhone, go to Settings → Display & Brightness. On a Samsung Galaxy, it's under Settings → Display → Dark mode. You can also set it to switch on automatically at sunset, which is handy if you keep forgetting.
What many people don't realise is that there's a crucial difference between screen technologies — and that difference largely determines whether dark mode actually makes a difference on your particular phone.
Does dark mode save battery life? Only with the right screen
This is where it gets interesting. Whether dark mode saves your battery depends entirely on the type of screen in your phone.
- OLED and AMOLED screens: each pixel lights itself individually. A black pixel uses literally no power at all. The darker the image, the less energy it consumes. Dark mode genuinely saves battery life here.
- LCD screens: a backlight illuminates the entire screen at all times, regardless of pixel colour. Black or white, the energy consumption stays roughly the same. Dark mode has virtually no effect on battery life with this screen type.
Back in 2018, Google published data showing that a fully black screen on a Pixel device (OLED) uses significantly less power than a fully white screen at maximum brightness. At lower brightness levels the difference is smaller, but still measurable.
Got an iPhone 12 or newer, a Samsung Galaxy S series, or another premium Android? Then you almost certainly have an OLED panel and will genuinely benefit from dark mode. Using a budget device with an LCD screen? The battery advantage is minimal.
Is your phone draining quickly even with dark mode on? The battery itself could be the culprit. At The Phone Shopper, — it's something we see every day in our Nijverdal workshop.
Is dark mode better for your eyes?
This is where things get even more interesting — and, honestly, a little less clear-cut. We hear it from customers in our shop all the time: "My eyes hurt less with dark mode on." That feeling is real, but it's context-dependent.
In the dark: dark mode wins
In the evening, in a dark room, a bright white screen is a real strain on your eyes. The harsh contrast tires your eyes more quickly and can disrupt melatonin production — the sleep hormone. In that situation, dark mode is clearly more comfortable. Your eyes don't have to work as hard to adjust, and you may sleep better if you're absorbing less bright light just before bed.
During the day: a white screen performs better
In daylight — especially outside in the sun — the balance tips the other way. White backgrounds reflect ambient light better, making text easier to read. In bright sunlight, dark mode actually causes more glare on the dark screen. Your eyes have to work harder to make out the contrast, which is exactly the opposite of what you want.
The science is mixed
Optometrists don't unanimously agree on this. Some studies point to benefits for people with certain eye conditions, but for the average user, a clear long-term reduction in eye strain hasn't been convincingly proven. Our honest advice: try it yourself and set it to switch on and off automatically based on the time of day.

How to turn on dark mode: step by step
- iPhone (iOS 13 and later): go to Settings → Display & Brightness → select 'Dark'. Or just ask Siri: "Turn on dark mode."
- Samsung Galaxy (Android 10 and later): Settings → Display → Dark mode → toggle it on. You can also set a schedule.
- Other Android phones: Settings → Display → Dark theme. The exact name varies by manufacturer.
- Automatic switching: set dark mode to activate at sunset and turn off at sunrise. This is the best way to get the most out of it.
- Per-app settings: many apps (WhatsApp, YouTube, Instagram) have their own dark mode in their settings menu. Switch these on separately if the system setting isn't automatically applied.
Other tips to extend your battery life
Dark mode is just one piece of the puzzle. If you really want to go easy on your battery, there are more effective measures you can take. Based on what we see every day in our workshop, these are the steps that help our customers the most:
- Lower your screen brightness: on every screen type, this has more impact than dark mode alone.
- Turn off Always On Display: convenient, but a serious battery drain.
- Limit background app refresh: apps quietly refreshing data in the background use up power without you noticing.
- Turn off 5G when you don't need it: 5G consumes more battery than 4G.
- Check your battery health: a battery that's dropped below 80% capacity will drain noticeably faster — dark mode or not.
That last point matters. We see it several times a week: someone whose phone won't hold a charge anymore, when the fix is simply a new battery. An is often done in 30 minutes while you wait. The same goes for a . If you prefer to do it yourself, we also stock individual parts such as batteries and screens.
Want to enjoy dark mode without any worries? Go refurbished
To get the most out of dark mode — including the battery savings — you need a device with a good-quality OLED screen. A refurbished iPhone or Samsung Galaxy with a certified battery (at least 85% capacity) performs just as well as new, for a lot less money.
At The Phone Shopper in Nijverdal, we sell refurbished iPhones and Samsung Galaxy devices that have been checked on 50 points by our technicians, including screen quality and battery health. They come with a 2-year warranty, free shipping across the Netherlands, and a 30-day return policy. Customers from Almelo, Rijssen, Hengelo, and the rest of Twente regularly make a special trip to see us.

Frequently asked questions
Does dark mode always save battery life on my phone?
No, not always. Dark mode only saves noticeable battery life if your device has an OLED or AMOLED screen. On LCD screens, energy consumption stays virtually the same because the backlight remains on regardless of the colours displayed.
Is dark mode bad for your eyes during the day?
Not bad exactly, but less than ideal. During the day — especially in bright sunlight — a white screen is more readable because it reflects ambient light better. Dark mode can actually cause more eye strain in daylight. For most people, the automatic day/night setting is the best choice.
Which iPhones have an OLED screen and benefit from dark mode?
From the iPhone 12 onwards, the entire iPhone lineup has an OLED screen. Before that, it was mixed: the iPhone X had OLED, but the iPhone 11 and the first iPhone SE generations used LCD. Not sure about your model? Pop in and we'll look it up together.
Will dark mode help if my battery is already draining fast?
If your battery health is low, dark mode won't solve the problem. The battery itself is worn out at that point. A battery replacement is the only lasting fix. At The Phone Shopper, — often while you wait.
Can dark mode damage my screen?
No. In fact, on OLED screens, dark mode actually reduces the risk of burn-in — where a static image becomes permanently visible on the display. If you regularly keep the same image on screen for long periods, dark mode is even a small form of protection for your display.
Does dark mode work in all apps?
Not automatically in every app. System apps and well-maintained apps (WhatsApp, Gmail, YouTube) generally follow the system setting without any issues. Older apps sometimes have no dark mode support and stay white. In those cases, you can check the settings for a force option, though the result can sometimes look a little rough around the edges.
