A BETTER ENVIRONMENT THROUGH REPAIR!
Demand for the raw materials used to make electrical devices is rising sharply. That is why the government works together with the business community, knowledge institutes, environmental organisations and other social organisations to use raw materials more sparingly and more intelligently. The goal: the Netherlands must be a circular economy by 2050.
But what exactly is a circular economy? A circular economy is a system of closed loops. A system in which devices, components and raw materials lose as little of their value as possible. In a fully circular economy there is no such thing as waste any more, because everything can be reused to make new products.
The government has (according to Rijksoverheid, 2019) three objectives to make the Dutch economy circular as quickly as possible.
- Existing production processes use raw materials more efficiently, so that fewer raw materials are needed.
- When new raw materials are needed, sustainably produced, renewable (inexhaustible) and widely available raw materials are used as much as possible.
- Developing new production methods and designing new products in a circular way.

E-waste is another name for electronic waste. It covers every product with a plug, a battery or a cord. These devices contain valuable raw materials such as gold, nickel and copper. Those are scarce materials that can and should be reused. Even so, electronic devices are often thrown away unnecessarily, and that is how e-waste is created
