Where ThePhoneShopper “once” started out replacing the screen of the iPhone 3, we saw that a lot changed about the screen with the Apple iPhone 4.
The screen of the iPhone 3 consists of 3 parts that can be replaced separately from each other. The iPhone 3 has a separate LCD (the LCD displays the image), a frame (which holds the LCD and touch together) and the touchscreen (the glass at the front). This automatically keeps the costs lower, and the difference in quality is not noticeable.
From the Apple iPhone 4 onwards, Apple chose to turn it into one complete part: from the iPhone 4, the LCD, frame and touchscreen are combined in a single module. This brings virtually no advantages for the customer; the only drawback is that the repair costs automatically become higher as a result. ThePhoneShopper therefore no longer has the option of saying: we will only replace the glass, because the LCD and the frame have to be replaced along with it.
To this day this “system” is used on all iPhones, including the most recent Apple iPhone 6s.
Prices and warranty Naturally, every iPhone generation comes with a different screen price. Where we can repair the iPhone 3G dirt cheap by comparison, the iPhone 6 is a different story. This is partly due to the use of complete modules (LCD, touchscreen and frame), but the quality is also getting higher. At the moment, for example, ThePhoneShopper replaces the entire module of the iPhone 6 for €179; this concerns an original part, about which you will find more information further on in this article.

ThePhoneShopper will of course carefully check whether the complaint was caused by a manufacturing defect or whether the user caused the damage. It may well be that the device did not fall very hard but simply fell awkwardly, with no damage visible on the outside, while a small crack is nevertheless noticeable in the LCD. These are defects that do not occur from the factory. You can also rule out such a crack yourself by cleaning the glass thoroughly and holding the device up to the light at different angles; this way the cracks in the LCD become visible.
Imitation or original parts for an Apple iPhone?
Almost exclusively with Apple we see that various factories manage to copy the parts almost 100%. The advantage of this is that many parts with no noticeable difference can be offered at a much lower price.
Advantages of an imitation screen for an iPhone: - The price is lower - Available for the iPhone 4, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5s.
Disadvantages of an imitation screen for an iPhone: - The glass is less sturdy; if the phone is dropped, there is a bigger chance the screen will crack again. - 3 months of warranty compared to 1 year for the original - Not available for an iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and the Plus variants.
Advantages of an original screen for an iPhone: - Higher quality; not visible, but the glass is sturdier, making it less likely to crack when dropped. - 1 year of warranty
Disadvantages of an original screen for an iPhone: - The price is higher
Many customers ask us why the screen of an Apple iPhone is much cheaper than that of, for example, a Samsung, HTC, Sony or another manufacturer. The answer to this is fairly simple and short:
The quality of other manufacturers is many times higher. This mainly concerns the LCD. The resolution and colours are considerably better on a Samsung Galaxy S5 or S6, for example. Apart from that there is very little difference; it comes down purely to the technology used, which is simply better and newer with other manufacturers and therefore automatically costs more to produce.
Warranty on these repairs Damage from drops, impacts and pressure, moisture and water damage, repairs or interventions by others and normal wear and tear (including burn-in on an OLED screen) are not covered. This is our own warranty, on top of your statutory rights. Those always continue to apply: if something is wrong that is not caused by use or damage, we will fix it free of charge.
