Your keys have vanished again. Or your backpack was definitely in the hallway, but now… nothing. Sound familiar? That's exactly the kind of moment Apple designed the AirTag for. But how does an AirTag actually work, what are its limitations, and is a €35 gadget really worth it?

What is an AirTag and how does it work?
An AirTag is a disc just over three centimetres across — compact enough to attach to your keyring or slip into your bag. Nothing remarkable on the outside. But inside sits smart technology that works in tandem with a vast global network of iPhones, iPads and MacBooks.
The AirTag uses four technologies simultaneously:
- Bluetooth: the signal that nearby Apple devices pick up silently, without you or them noticing a thing.
- UWB (Ultra-Wideband): for centimetre-accurate Precision Finding when used with an iPhone 11 or later.
- NFC: if someone finds your lost AirTag, they can tap their phone against it — even an Android — to see your contact details.
- The Find My network: the heart of the system. Every iPhone near your AirTag anonymously sends its encrypted location to Apple, which passes it on to you. Private, secure and completely automatic.
The Find My network spans more than a billion devices worldwide. In a busy town or city, there's a good chance your lost keys will be spotted within minutes by someone walking past with an iPhone — without them ever knowing it happened.
How do you set up an AirTag?
Setup is surprisingly smooth. Here's how it works:
- Pull the plastic tab out of the AirTag (this activates the battery).
- Hold the AirTag close to your iPhone — an animation appears automatically.
- Give the AirTag a name: "Keys", "Backpack", "Bike" — whatever works for you.
- Link it to your Apple ID.
- Open the Find My app on your iPhone and it appears straight away.
That's it. No app to download, no account to create, no hassle. The whole process takes under two minutes. You do need an iPhone running iOS 14.5 or later — older devices won't work. What can you use it for?
Most people buy an AirTag for their keys. Makes sense. But there are plenty of other handy uses:
- Luggage when travelling: airlines lose bags. You'll know exactly where yours is.
- Your bike: tuck an AirTag into a discreet spot in your bike bag or frame. If your bike gets stolen, you've got a starting point for the police.
- Your child's school bag: reassuring peace of mind when your child cycles to school independently.
- Your car: handy when you can't remember where you parked in a large car park — or in worse situations.
- Pets: technically possible, though a dedicated GPS tracker is better for pets thanks to real-time updates beyond Bluetooth range.

Is an AirTag safe and privacy-friendly?
A fair question — there's been plenty of debate about tracker misuse in recent years. Apple has taken this seriously. Here's how the privacy protection works:
- If an unknown AirTag is travelling with you (without your knowledge), your iPhone will alert you after a while: "An AirTag is moving with you."
- Android users can install the Tracker Detect app for the same protection.
- An AirTag that's been separated from its owner for a while will start playing a sound — so you can find it.
- All location data in the Find My network is end-to-end encrypted. Even Apple can't see where your AirTag is.
Honestly, the system isn't perfect. There have been documented cases of misuse, even though that's a criminal offence. But for everyday use, the AirTag is one of the most privacy-conscious trackers on the market.
AirTag vs. other trackers: which should you choose?
The best-known alternative is the Tile tracker. Tile works on a similar network concept, but its network is considerably smaller than Apple's. In practice, the AirTag tends to locate items faster and more accurately in populated areas — simply because there are so many iPhones around.

Battery, cost and everything else you need to know
The AirTag runs on a standard CR2032 coin battery — the kind you can pick up for a couple of euros at any supermarket. Apple promises a lifespan of around one year. Replacing it takes ten seconds: twist off the cover, swap the battery, put it back on. No screwdriver, no fuss.
What does an AirTag cost? The recommended retail price is €35 for one and €119 for a four-pack. Keep an eye out for deals at authorised resellers — you'll sometimes find them bundled with a refurbished iPhone too.
One limitation worth being upfront about: the AirTag has no real-time GPS. You only see its location when another Apple device has spotted the tracker. In sparsely populated areas, that can take a while. For real-time tracking of, say, a car in a remote location, a dedicated GPS tracker with its own SIM card is more reliable.

Does an AirTag work with Android?
Not as an owner — you need an iPhone to set up and manage an AirTag. However, someone with an Android phone can use NFC to scan a lost AirTag and see your contact details. If you're worried about being tracked without your knowledge, you can install Apple's free Tracker Detect app on Android.
How accurate is an AirTag's location?
With an iPhone 11 or later and the UWB chip (Precision Finding), you can get accuracy down to a few centimetres. At a distance — via the Find My network — you get a location accurate to within a few metres, depending on how recently a device spotted it. In busy areas this works brilliantly; in quieter areas the location may be slightly less current.
Can I hide an AirTag on my bike or in my car?
Yes, and many people do. Just make sure it's protected from moisture and vibration — there are purpose-made waterproof holders designed for bikes and cars. The AirTag itself is IP67-rated, so a bit of rain won't be a problem. Extended submersion is a different story.
What do I do if my AirTag stops responding?
First check the battery — after a year it's often flat. Replace it with a CR2032. Still not working? Reset the AirTag by removing and reinserting the battery five times in quick succession.
